After taking refuge in the Three Jewels, lay people have the five precepts, the eight fasting precepts, and the lay bodhisattva precepts. The five precepts are not to kill, not to steal, not to engage in sexual misconduct, not to lie, and not to drink alcohol. Not killing means not killing living animals; not stealing means not stealing other people's property; not committing adultery means not engaging in adultery outside of the couple; not lying means not speaking deceitful words; not drinking alcohol means not taking intoxicating substances that narcotize human nature. Alcohol or drugs.
Eight Passes of Fasting
﹝Combined with the Vipassana Sutra and the Agama Sutra>
The passes are forbidden. It is said that the eight crimes such as killing, stealing, and prostitution are kept in confinement so that they will not commit the crime. The theory goes: Those who are fasting will not eat when they are in a state of excess. The eight precepts are used to help complete the fasting method, and the three precepts are supported by each other, so it is also called the eight-branch fasting method. The eighth, fourteenth, fifteenth, twenty-third, twenty-ninth and thirtieth days of each month are the six fast days. On these six days, those who can practice these eight fasts will be celebrated by the heavens, which means they will be blessed with good fortune and longevity.
[1. Not to kill], not to kill means to stop the life of all sentient beings. You don’t kill living things, and you don’t teach others to kill living beings.
[2. Don’t steal]. Those who don’t steal mean they don’t steal other people’s property. You do not steal, and you do not teach others to steal.
[3. Do not engage in sexual immorality]. Those who do not engage in sexual immorality mean that they do not engage in sexual intercourse with those who are not their own wives and concubines.
[4. Do not lie]. He who does not lie means that he does not lie. Nor can he deceive others by lying.
[5. Don’t drink alcohol] Those who don’t drink alcohol say that alcohol is the root of disordered nature and a gateway to disorder, so they shouldn’t drink it to their heart’s content.
[6. Do not sit on a high and broad bed]. For those who sit on a high and broad bed, the Agama Sutra says: A bed that is one foot or six inches high is not considered high; a bed that is four feet wide is not considered wide; and a bed that is eight feet long is not considered high. Not big. But if it exceeds this size, it is called a tall and broad bed, and it is not suitable to sit on it.
[7. Without flower garlands] Those who do not have flower garlands do not use flowers as garlands and pearls as garlands, but as ornaments for the body and head.
[8. Not good at singing, dancing, and music] Those who are not good at singing, dancing, and music mean that they do not know how to sing, dance, and play music, and cannot go to other places to watch and listen to music, nor do they teach others to sing, dance, or play music.
Bodhisattva Precepts (Sutra Name) The precepts of the Mahayana Bodhisattva Sangha, generally known as the Three-Gathering Pure Precepts, there are two different ways, one is the doctrine of Brahma Net, and the other is the doctrine of yoga inheritance. The method of receiving precepts according to the Brahma Net Sutra comes from the collection of Brahma Net Sutras. Its precepts are the ten heavy taboos and forty-eight light precepts mentioned in the Brahma Net Sutra. The teachings of yoga inheritance come from the Good Precepts Sutra. This sutra is the teachings of the Buddha when he first became enlightened. Maitreya, who made up the place, heard it personally. It is also the level of the bodhisattva in the yoga treatise. According to this teaching, the rules, precepts and the teachings of the shravakas are included. It is the same as the two hundred and fifty precepts for Hinayana monks. However, it is the Bodhisattva precepts to take all good Dharma for the benefit of others and benefit all sentient beings. That is to say, the precepts of collecting good dharma in the three gatherings are beneficial to sentient beings. Therefore, what the precepts and signs say is not necessarily the same, and each yoga theory and upholding ground theory are different.
