1997 before the financial crisis, there were 144 domestic commercial banks, 4 150 branches, 44 foreign-funded and joint-venture banks and 0/527 government banks in Indonesia. However, according to the statistics of Indonesia's central bank, by the end of 2008, there were 24 commercial banks/KOOC-0, including 5 state-owned commercial banks, 26 regional development banks, 68 private state banks (32 of which have foreign exchange business licenses and 36 do not), and 25 foreign joint venture banks (including 5 joint venture banks/KOOC-0 and 5 foreign banks/KOOC-0). In terms of total assets, the top three commercial banks in Indonesia are Bank of Mandeli, People's Bank of Indonesia and Bank of East Asia. The top three foreign banks are Citibank, Deutsche Bank and HSBC.
