What is the SAT?

Origin

During World War I, Robert Yerkes, the leader of the New IQ movement, convinced the U.S. Army to use the test he invented to test the intelligence of new recruits. Yerkes's assistant was Carl Burlingham, a psychologist who was teaching at Princeton University. After World War I, Burlingham modified this test method and used it as a university entrance examination. It was first tried on thousands of university applicants in 1926.

SAT I originated from Harvard and was originally a pure intelligence test.

In 1933, Harvard University President James Conant decided to launch a scholarship to attract outstanding students from public schools to study at Harvard University. Conant tasked his deputy, Henry Chauncey, with finding a way to test scholarship candidates. Chauncey found Burlingham and found Burlingham's SAT test. Principal Conant admired this kind of exam because it was a pure intelligence test and had nothing to do with the high school courses and education the participants had received.

In 1934, Harvard University used the SAT test to select scholarship applicants. The following year, Harvard University expanded the test to all students applying to Harvard.

The United States' "College Entrance Examination" is the best in the world. In 1938, Vice President Chauncey issued an appeal to all member schools of the College Board, asking them to use the SAT test as a scholarship application test. In 1948, the Educational Testing Service (ETS), with Conant as its first chairman, was established. ETS served as a contractor to the College Board to provide college entrance examination services. Since then, SAT test scores have become one of the most basic admission requirements for most universities.

Historical situation

Before May 2005, the SAT test was divided into two parts: English and mathematics. The minimum score for each part was 200 points, and the full score was 800 points. If you get the wrong question, you will be penalized. Points deducted. This exam was once called the Scholastic Aptitude Test. According to statistics, the average scores in 1995 were 424 points in English and 475 points in mathematics. Only 7 candidates in the United States scored more than 600 points in the English part, while the math part reached 600 points. There are 21 students who scored above 600 points. The examination committee believed that the previous questions were too difficult and the scoring standard was too high. It decided to use the average score of the year as the midpoint starting from April 1995. The scores of the two subjects were raised to 500 points each, and the total score of all candidates before 1995 was determined. The recognition is increased by 100 points. In recent years, about 20% of candidates have achieved a total score of 1,200 points; only 1% of students in both the math and English sections have achieved a score of 770 or more. The average math score in the United States in 2003 was 518, and the average English score was 508. Most people think the English part is more difficult. In 2003***, 944 people obtained perfect scores (1,600 points).

SAT scores are not absolute scores, but relative scores. The scores are not directly proportional to the number of correct answers. The standard for evaluating the middle score of 500 points is set by the examination committee based on the fluctuation of the test score distribution of all candidates. The actual scoring standard after 1995 was 100 points lower than before.

In 1995, while raising the middle score, the College Board changed the name of the previous SAT to SAT I, and its full English name was also changed to Scholastic Assessment Test. The only difference was the word in the middle, which changed to "Academic" The Wisdom test is an academic "assessment" test. This may be to emphasize that the purpose of this test is to assess students' learning ability after entering college. Rather than just testing students' intelligence to cope with intelligence tests. The SAT I exam has some changes in question types, but not much. People often still refer to the renamed SAT I as the SAT test. In fact, the two mean the same thing. The College Board believes that the SAT test can be used to evaluate the academic ability of high school graduates. According to its data, students with higher grades do better in college.

It is the standard entrance examination for American high school students to enter American universities. It is called the "College Entrance Examination" in the United States, and its test results are accepted and recognized by more than 3,600 colleges and universities in the United States.

Basic Overview

SAT is the abbreviation of English Scholastic Assessment Test, and its Chinese name is Academic Ability Assessment Test. It is administered by the Educational Testing Service (Educational Testing Service) headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. Testing Service (ETS). SAT scores are an important reference for high school students from all over the world to apply for study and scholarships in prestigious American schools. Currently, if high school students want to apply for top universities in the United States, in addition to providing language proficiency test scores such as TOEFL, 90% of schools require reference to students' SAT scores, because it is the only thing that American universities can obtain that can compare students from different regions and Achievements in school student abilities. It is almost impossible for Chinese high school students to be admitted to the top 100 universities in the United States if they only have TOEFL scores. In addition, SAT scores are also a decisive factor in whether Chinese high school students can apply for scholarships. So we can approximately understand SAT as the American college entrance examination. (The admission methods of colleges and universities in the United States are also different from those in China. Simply understood, the college entrance examination in the United States is not comprehensive. When American universities evaluate whether a student should be admitted, the proportion of SAT scores generally does not exceed 50, and the general ranking Schools that are not particularly top-notch explicitly do not require SAT scores from areas like mainland China where there are no SAT test centers, so it is not impossible to apply to a lower-ranked school without SAT, but having SAT scores is definitely an advantage over not having one. More. Under the same circumstances, priority will be given to students with SAT scores)

More than 2 million high school students take the SAT every year in the United States, and it is recognized and required by almost all American universities, especially the Ivy League schools. It is an important reference indicator for determining admissions and evaluating scholarships. Therefore, nearly 2,000 Chinese high school students took the exam in 2005, and this number continues to explode year by year.

The SAT exam is divided into two parts: SAT I Reasoning Test and SAT II (Subject Tests) special test. SAT1 mainly tests candidates' writing, reading and mathematical abilities; SAT2 involves subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. The three most popular subjects chosen by Chinese students are mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. Generally, Chinese high school students who apply to enter American undergraduate schools only need to take the SAT I test. Compared with the TOEFL test, although the SAT is not a language test, it is a unified test for high school students all over the world, including American high school students. Therefore, the difficulty of vocabulary alone is much higher than that of the TOEFL. Especially for the SAT that was reformed in March 2005, the new writing section is a test of students' pure English language ability. This single requirement is beyond the reach of TOEFL and IELTS. Therefore, it is a mistake for Chinese students to understand SAT only as a language-based reasoning and special test. On the contrary, it requires students to have a higher level of language proficiency than TOEFL.

Having SAT scores will greatly increase your chances of admission. SAT scores allow Chinese high school students to enter the same admissions platform as American students. SAT scores are a language recognized by American universities to tell them that you are excellent. Good SAT scores indicate that your intelligence and academic performance put you at an advantage among applicants, including students from the United States and around the world. Almost all the freshmen admitted every year to Harvard, Yale, Princeton and other prestigious schools have high SAT scores.

Since not many Chinese students currently take the SAT exam, your SAT scores can also make you stand out from Chinese applicants. Judging from the situation, SAT will be a test that Chinese high school students in the United States have to take. Therefore, the sooner you take the test, the better.

The SAT is also helpful in applying for scholarships. The annual tuition fees plus living expenses in American schools reach tens of thousands of dollars, so scholarships are very important to Chinese students.

Proving your excellent SAT scores is an important condition for applying for scholarships. In addition, it is also a necessary condition for applying for honors scholarships during university studies after admission.

SAT is very important for employment in the United States. Many large American companies require applicants to provide SAT scores when recruiting employees. Why are grades in high school so important? Because it represents your intellectual quality, whether you are smart enough and have enough potential. The October 28, 2003 "Wall Street Journal" article titled "More Employers Are Requiring Job Seekers to Provide SAT Scores" is the best illustration of this trend.

[Edit this paragraph] Examination Methods

The SAT exam does not have test centers in mainland China. There are only test centers in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and in Asia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. There are also test centers in Vietnam and Thailand. Therefore, mainland candidates have to go to Hong Kong or Taiwan to take the exam (the location is selected when registering online, see the introduction to the registration method above for details).

There are six SAT examination centers in Hong Kong ***, as follows:

Score Calculation Method

To understand the calculation method of SAT scores, first, we have to introduce two basic concepts: raw scores and relative performance percentages.

Each question on the SAT is scored equally. Regardless of the difficulty level of the question, each question on the SAT is scored equally. If you answer an SAT question correctly, you will get one point; if you answer an SAT question incorrectly, you will lose 1/4 point; if you do not answer the question, you will get no points.

Original score: The number of correct answers multiplied by 1, minus the number of incorrect answers multiplied by 1/4, is equal to the original score.

Relative score percentage: Statistics of the original scores and relative percentage scores of candidates in the same exam.

SAT scores: Map the original scores into a table from 200 to 800 according to a relative ratio. The content of each test question is different, so it is difficult to use the original scores to evaluate the results of the two tests. The relative score percentage obtained through this statistical method can relatively tell the university's admissions staff the relative level of each student. For example, in reading: for one SAT test, the best raw score was 67 points (67 questions); for another SAT test, the best raw score was 66 points (67 questions). Then, according to the original score, 67 points is better than 66 points. This is obviously unreasonable. Therefore, it is more practical to map the original scores between 200 and 800 according to a corresponding relationship.

[Edit this paragraph] New SAT

Starting from May 2005, the SAT test is mainly divided into three parts: English, writing, and mathematics; each part is worth 800 points,* **Total 2400 points.

Previously, the SAT only had two parts, English and Math, each worth 800 points, totaling 1,600 points. Since the SAT now includes a writing component, the original "SAT2 Writing Test" has been cancelled.

In addition to adding a writing section, some slightly more difficult algebra questions have been added to the mathematics section. Of course, it won’t just add, not subtract. For example: the boring anti-meaning vocabulary part is changed to easier reading to fill in the blanks.

On the surface, the SAT has become more difficult, longer, and more content after the reform. In fact, if you consider that due to the addition of the writing section, the universities that originally required SAT2 writing will no longer require SAT2 writing. Many colleges will instead require two SAT2 subject test scores. Moreover, as a result, Asians have to work hard on writing. Perhaps, in the long run, this reform will be a good thing for Asians as a whole.

Starting from May 2005, in order to enter American universities for undergraduate studies, high school sophomores and seniors must take the new SAT test.

[Edit this paragraph]Test content

The SAT I exam includes two parts: SAT I Reasoning Test (Reasoning Test) and SAT II Subject Tests (Subject Tests). The exam lasts three hours and 45 minutes. The questions are multiple choice and writing. It mainly tests the candidates' reading, mathematics and writing abilities. The full score is 2400 points. SAT II (Subject Tests) lasts for one hour, and most of them are multiple-choice questions, which mainly test the candidates' knowledge of a certain major. Optional SAT II single subject test subjects include mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, foreign languages ??(including Chinese, Japanese, German, French, Spanish), etc. Students should apply according to the requirements of each major and school. The following mainly introduces the key points of the SAT General Test:

The additional section is not graded and cannot be distinguished from other normal sections. The duration is 25 minutes. The additional section can be one of any other sections except writing and the 10-minute multiple-choice question. It's best not to guess which section is the extra without grade. Because ETS will design the additional part to be no different from the normal part.

What is the difference between SAT and TOEFL? ——SAT tests intelligence; TOEFL tests language;

TOEFL is a test for students from non-English speaking countries who apply to study in universities or graduate schools in countries such as the United States or Canada. An English proficiency test. In short, TOEFL tests students' language ability, while SAT tests students' logical reasoning ability. It is not only a mandatory condition for entering undergraduate colleges

, but also a standard for measuring whether a person is "smart" in American society. The significance of taking the SAT goes far beyond studying itself. It is also a reflection of one's thinking ability.

Note: In the past, sending SAT scores was not an option. Once you choose to send it, all historical scores will be sent to the school. Starting from October 2008, when collegeboard sends scores, you can choose the best one to send (students who have exam records before October cannot choose and must send all of them)

Mainland students going to Optimized itinerary for taking the SAT test in Hong Kong

As international students, our Chinese high school students who apply for undergraduate studies at American universities must take the SAT, which is equivalent to the entrance exam for American universities. Currently, the United States has SAT test centers in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Therefore, taking the SAT exam in Hong Kong has become the first choice for mainland students.

There are five SAT examination centers in Hong Kong ***, among which American International School (AIS) is the most convenient in terms of transportation and its management is also quite good. Because of their many years of experience in organizing SAT exams, AIS teachers from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong are familiar with everything. The preparations are in order and start as scheduled and end as scheduled.

When taking the exam in Hong Kong, the ideal way is to first apply for a "pass" for free travel in Hong Kong at the candidate's location.

Then arrive in Hong Kong the day before the exam. After settling in, set aside time to visit AIS and familiarize yourself with the environment and driving routes. This will help you feel relaxed the next day and help you get good grades.

Specifically, after exiting Luo Wu Checkpoint and crossing Luo Wu Bridge and being verified and inspected by the Hong Kong police, do not leave the security building to take the train. Instead, buy an "Octopus" card per person at the ticket office. The deposit for each card is HKD 50, plus other transportation expenses during your stay in Hong Kong, which is the total cost of purchasing the card. Usually, just going to Hong Kong for exams and general shopping and sightseeing, a card worth 200 Hong Kong dollars is enough. This card can be used on commonly used means of transportation, such as buses, minibuses, subways, trains, Star Ferry, etc., which is convenient and fast. When returning to the mainland from Hong Kong, before passing Luo Wu Customs, ask the Hong Kong police. He will tell you where to return the "Octopus" card (there will be a handling fee if you use it for no more than 3 months, and full refund will not be issued). Then you can come back easily.

After buying an Octopus card and taking the train, be sure to get off at the "Kowloon Tong" station, but do not leave the station (you need to exit the station and then enter the MTR station, the two stations are not connected). Kowloon Tong is the only place where trains and subways intersect in Hong Kong (you can also change subway at Tsim Sha Tsui Station, but it is not recommended to walk far away). It is very convenient to go to other places in Hong Kong. This is also one of the main reasons for choosing AIS.

After getting off the train at Kowloon Tong Station, follow the signs on the wall to find Exit A2. Of course, you can also ask the police. The police in Hong Kong are just like the kind old ladies around us, they will tell you in detail how to go. Moreover, the hair and beard are clean and the clothes are tidy. After exiting the A2 station, my eyes suddenly opened up. There are two minibus lanes on the right hand side, but what you have to do is cross the lanes. At this time, please note that Hong Kong’s traffic rules are to drive on the left, which is different from our habits. Remember safety.

Cross the lane, turn left, and walk along the lane for about 20 meters until you reach the intersection of the lane you just crossed and "WATERLOO ROAD", then turn right and follow the lane. Keep going straight on WATERLOO ROAD and you will reach AIS in about 10 minutes. There are some distinctive buildings along the way that you can appreciate while walking. When you see the dark brown door, congratulations, you have arrived at AIS.

Arrive early on exam day. There is a small table placed on the inside of the door. Usually you have to queue up to register. Usually there are two people, one is a male teacher from the UK and a young female teacher from Hong Kong; the other is a young female teacher from the United States. They check your pass and type the ticket from the computer. They are very active and serious. Especially the American female teacher, with her blue eyes, and her beautiful words that make you feel comfortable listening to her.

What needs to be noted at this time is that right behind their small desk is the passage leading to the SAT I examination room. Before registering for the test, these teachers will greet everyone in English to go to the toilet first, and then go to the SAT I and II examination rooms to take their seats. Candidates sit at both ends of a long table. There are usually two sets of test papers. Each candidate should take a different set of questions from the candidate next to him.

Before selecting a seat, candidates should pay attention to the location of the whiteboard in the examination room, because the start and end time of each part of the examination will be written on it. The exam is divided into 7 parts. The first two parts are tested continuously, and then there is a five-minute break. Candidates can come out and wait conveniently, and they need to be verified again when entering. After taking the test for two consecutive parts, you are allowed to rest in your seat for one minute. The next three parts are tested in one go.

The teachers who invigilated the exam were still the same. They put forward different requirements and precautions according to different stages of the exam. After the official test begins, everything the invigilator says is the same as what the invigilators say in other exam centers around the world, to show fairness to every SAT candidate around the world. They are based on the “SAT Program Associate Supervisor’s Manual” uniformly distributed by ETS, without saying a word more and without saying a word less. Everything is in order.

The SAT II examination room is next to the school's basketball court. Since there are not many candidates taking the SAT II test, the examination room is a smaller classroom. The invigilator’s approach is basically the same as above.

However, SAT II can take up to three subjects on the same day, so candidates with less than three subjects will go first.

SAT test room: All tests start at 8:30 and end at approximately 12:30.

The AIS campus is very small and consists of three parts: elementary school, junior high school and high school. Some of their high school graduates take the SAT exam directly. Compared with mainland students, they do not have the pressure of the college entrance examination and can prepare calmly.

There is a big-bellied Maitreya Buddha in AIS, who smiles all the time and is not big. It is placed in a very inconspicuous position on campus. Those who are interested can look for it, and it may be a blessing.

Among the teachers at AIS, there is a female teacher from Shanghai. I heard her surname is Zheng, she is dignified, beautiful, capable and enthusiastic. If necessary, you can contact her to answer questions. It seems that she is the only one who can speak Mandarin, and of course Shanghainese. It’s just that I don’t speak Shanghainese, so I have never spoken in Shanghainese. Here I would like to express my gratitude to her again! It is recommended that candidates who have contacted her bring some Shanghai snacks when they go to express their gratitude. That's what I did. Unfortunately, she wasn't there that day, so I left a note and put it on her desk.

The phone number of the AIS office is: 00852-23363812. Remember to speak in English, and then ask for Ms. Zheng.

If you have parents accompanying your child to take the exam, you can wait on campus while your child takes the exam; you can also go to "Festival City", Hong Kong's largest comprehensive entertainment shopping mall, to "escape the summer heat". There are several national-style restaurants; there are world-famous clothing stores; there is an indoor cinema and the largest indoor real ice skating rink in Hong Kong. It's a great place to spend time. Just walk back to Kowloon Tong Station A2, go down to the station, find or ask for the exit to Festival Walk (Exit C).

Or you can visit the City University of Hong Kong next door. Although the campus is relatively small, the environment is very elegant and the school is also good, ranking 145th in the world.
