On March 25th, 20021year, the Suez Canal Authority of Egypt indicated that it would temporarily stop the Suez Canal traffic. On March 28th, the chairman of the Suez Canal Authority said that there were 369 ships waiting to sail in the Suez Canal, including 25 oil tankers. On 20021April 13, a court in Ismailia, Egypt, approved the application submitted by Suez Canal Authority for the formal arrest of the cargo ship Changci, and the court decided to detain the ship before the owner paid about 900 million US dollars in compensation.
Previously, after consultation with Ever Given, the Suez Canal Authority determined that the final compensation amount was 900 million US dollars to compensate the losses caused by the six-day suspension of the canal and related rescue expenses. However, due to the shipowner's delay in paying the compensation, the Administration decided to apply for formal detention of the freighter.
