The rulers of Zhou Dynasty thought that the developed "Huo Zhi" in Shang Dynasty was not very beneficial to the development of the country. Huo Zhi's behavior is not only the exploitation of laborers (mainly agriculture), but also the hotbed of immoral characteristics such as greed and indulgence. Therefore, under the mainstream ideology of "emphasizing agriculture and restraining commerce" in the Zhou Dynasty (which lasted for thousands of years before the "reform and opening up"), people would try their best to avoid engaging in commercial activities.
But in fact this business is indispensable. As a result, the "adherents" of Shang Dynasty engaged in this "lowly" business at the beginning of Zhou Dynasty because of "immorality". Therefore, at the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, people who were called "Huo Zhi" were called "businessmen", which means "people from destroyed commercial countries".
Under such circumstances, "businessman" and "business" are really not shy, let alone call names.
With the development of society, "business" (Huo Zhi), as a profession, has gradually expanded from "business believers" to a wider group of people; At the same time, the "adherents of Shang Dynasty" were completely integrated into the society of Zhou Dynasty. Later, with the political development of the "Western Regions", the "Huo Zhi" in the Western Regions began to trade in "China", of course, with capital; "Jia" consists of three words: "Shi" and "Bei", which is a title for businessmen to distinguish them from local businessmen. The so-called "eastern merchants and western merchants" or "Chinese merchants and western merchants" have become a symbol of secularization.
Later, "Shang" and "Jia" gradually blended-some businessmen from China also went to the western regions to do business; Western businessmen also stayed in China to take root; Between the south and the north, this kind of necessary and rich business with low social status meets and merges into a "class", and people gradually call it "businessman".
At this stage, the long Zhou dynasty is not over yet. As a social stratum, it is difficult for businessmen to distinguish who is a westerner and who is a "middle-earth". But no matter what "Jia" or "Shang" is called, they are "doing that"-Huo Zhi. They are also a group of "immoral" and "humble" people under the ideology established in the Zhou Dynasty. Therefore, Lv Buwei is called a "cloth-clad master"-no matter how old you are, you are still a "cloth-clad".
Cloth, different from "Jinyi", not only refers to the material itself of clothes, but also involves the modification of materials and the style of clothes, and is also a symbol of social identity.
The "patriarchal clan system" established in the Zhou Dynasty defined four kinds of nobles, namely, the son of heaven, princes, doctors and scholars. Outside these four grades, none of them belong to the nobility. Theoretically, they are all "cloth clothes".
