Can ETF funds be short?
ETF funds can be short. There are two ways to short ETF. One is to short ETF through securities companies' securities lending business, that is, to borrow ETF from brokers and then sell it to achieve high selling and low buying; The second is to short through corresponding financial derivatives, such as futures and options.
The conditions for shorting ETF through securities lending are the same as those for opening stock margin financing and securities lending business. There are also many ETF funds in the market that can be traded through securities lending, such as Southern Growth Enterprise Market ETF, Guangfa CSI 500ETF, Huaxia CSI 300ETF and Huaan Growth Enterprise Market 50ETF.
If you short ETF through financial derivatives, the main financial derivatives in China are options, including SSE 50ETF options and CSI 300ETF options. Investors can short ETFs by buying put options or selling call options.
