Taihu Lake spans Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, connecting Wuxi in the north, Huzhou in the south, Yixing in the west and Suzhou in the east. The west and southwest of Taihu Lake are hilly and mountainous areas, and the east is dominated by plains and water networks.

Taihu Lake is located in the subtropical zone, with a mild and humid climate and a monsoon climate. In summer, influenced by tropical ocean air mass, southeast wind prevails, which is mild and rainy. Winter is controlled by the high-pressure air mass in the north, prevailing northerly winds, cold and dry.

Introduction to Taihu Lake

Taihu Lake, located in the southern edge of the Yangtze River Delta, was called Zhenze and Giant Canal in ancient times, also known as Wuhu and Lize. It is one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China, ranking third. It is located in the south of Jiangsu Province, bordering Wuxi in the north, Huzhou in Zhejiang Province in the south, Changzhou and Yixing in Jiangsu Province in the west and Suzhou in the east. Jiangsu Province exercises administrative jurisdiction over the whole territory of Taihu Lake.

Taihu Lake covers an area of 2,427 square kilometers, with a water area of 2,338 square kilometers and a coastline of 393 kilometers. Its west and southwest are hills and mountains, and its east is dominated by plains and water networks. Taihu Lake is located in the subtropical zone, with a mild and humid climate and a monsoon climate. There are many rivers, ports and estuaries in Taihu Lake, with more than 50 major rivers entering and leaving.

Taihu Lake drainage system shows a discharge trend from west to east, with an average annual runoff of 7.5 billion cubic meters and a storage capacity of 4.4 billion cubic meters. Taihu Lake has more than 50 islands, of which 18 are inhabited. In 2022, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Natural Resources and other six departments issued a new round of "Overall Plan for Comprehensive Management of Water Environment in Taihu Lake Basin".
