If you haven't closed your position, then you have to return it to the futures company. But this usually doesn't happen, because when your funds are insufficient to maintain your position, the futures company will force you to close your position.

Exchanges don't settle accounts with customers, they only settle accounts with futures companies, and futures companies settle accounts with customers.
