: India is the country with the highest banana production, producing 27.575 million tons of bananas every year. More than 75% of farmers grow it. Banana cultivation in West India accounts for 68% of the total, followed by central region, eastern region and northern region. Bananas are mainly consumed by locals, but are also exported. Bananas are mainly grown in the Indian states of Gujarat, Assam, Kerala, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Karnataka, Tamil Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh State planting. Banana varieties grown in India include: Poovan Nendran, Robusta, Dwarf Cavendish and zhenzuan.
