Why didn't futures give up at maturity?
Because futures have a delivery system, physical delivery (commodity futures) or cash delivery (stock index futures), full payment or physical delivery according to the contract. Generally speaking, commodity futures are not allowed to enter the delivery period, and will be forced to close the position on the last trading day, admit the loss (profit) and leave.

I suggest you look at the basic system of futures to avoid operational mistakes.
