The viscosity and boiling point of fuel oil obtained from petroleum distillation are between paraffin and lubricating oil. It boils above about 250 degrees Celsius.

Diesel oil refers to the fraction obtained by fractionating crude oil in refineries, and its boiling point ranges from 200℃ to 500℃. The gas oil distilled from the atmospheric tower is called atmospheric gas oil (AGO) or gas oil. Generally, it is a fraction of 200 ~ 380℃, which is used to produce aviation kerosene, light diesel oil and heavy diesel oil. The gas oil distilled from the vacuum tower is called vacuum gas oil (VGO) or wax oil, which is used to produce lubricating oil and transformer oil. In order to obtain more gasoline and diesel oil from crude oil, most refineries use vacuum gas oil as feedstock for catalytic cracking or hydrocracking. In order to make up for the shortage of naphtha, gas oil is also one of the cracking raw materials for olefin production, but its ethylene yield is low and there are many other by-products.
