What is the extraction of ethylene glycol (is ethylene glycol extracted from petroleum)?
In coal chemical industry, ethylene glycol is undoubtedly the protagonist in recent months. A few years ago, the project of making ethylene glycol from coal began. In February this year, the chemical fiber giant said that it would not consider making ethylene glycol from coal. In the case that cost advantage and quality technology are not dominant, it seems that it has reached a low point.

So in this issue, we will sort out the storm of coal-based ethylene glycol in detail.

What is ethylene glycol?

1. ethylene glycol is an important organic chemical raw material, which is widely used downstream. It is mainly used to produce polyester and antifreeze, as well as unsaturated polyester resin, lubricant, plasticizer, surfactant and explosives.

2. Half of the world's ethylene glycol (about 90% in China) is used for polyester production in China. In China, 85% of polyester is used for polyester fiber production in chemical fiber industry. As the most important chemical fiber product, polyester has basically achieved year-on-year growth compared with China's GDP. Chemical fiber enterprises are mainly concentrated in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and large chemical fiber enterprises such as Hengyi and Rong Sheng are located here, so a large amount of ethylene glycol is needed to meet the production of polyester fiber.

3. The production technology of ethylene glycol is mainly petroleum route, that is, ethylene is used as raw material to produce ethylene glycol through ethylene oxide; In addition, there are production technologies for preparing ethylene glycol from coal and natural gas. However, the capacity of the target oil circuit can't meet the gap, and ethylene glycol was once the largest chemical product imported by China.

Under the background of large demand, low cost of process route and high oil price in previous years, compared with the traditional oil route to produce ethylene glycol, the coal-to-ethylene glycol process can give full play to its cost advantage. Therefore, some projects have been initiated.

The coal-to-ethylene glycol project is a demonstration project during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period. The first project with an annual output of 200,000 tons was put into production at the end of 2009.

There are 25 major ethylene glycol producers in China with a total production capacity of 5.833 million tons. Among them, petroleum ethylene method accounts for about 64.9%, and synthesis gas to ethylene glycol (coal to ethylene glycol) accounts for 26.6%.

It is reported that by 2020, China will build 4 1 coal-based ethylene glycol projects with a total production capacity of10.26 million tons. The prospect seems bright.

However, the giant chemical fiber enterprise said: I don't need the coal glycol enterprise to say that I have good quality. If the price is reasonable, other enterprises will also use it.

So who is right and what are the factors supporting their attitude?

Is technology an accomplice?

Ethylene glycol downstream enterprises are used to using petroleum route products, but they have a little comment on the quality of coal-based ethylene glycol products. The main reason is that the oil route process has been running for many years at home and abroad, and there are few impurities produced in the process. The process of separating impurities is mature, and the product can meet the requirements of polyester polymerization. In chemical industry, polymerization is a difficult process, which requires strict operating conditions, especially the purity of raw materials.

According to experts, ethylene glycol process includes two parts: synthesis and separation of ethylene glycol. At first, scientific research paid more attention to synthesis than separation. When the demonstration project was established, the separation process was not perfect, because the research depth was not enough, the research was not carried out to the end, and strict polymerization experiments were not carried out. Although the product meets the current industrial ethylene glycol standard, it does not meet the requirements of polyethylene glycol.

At present, there is a phenomenon of blended combustion in the actual production of ethylene glycol from coal in polyester enterprises, and the proportion of blended combustion is generally 20-30%.

Or is it because of the price?

Eight polyester enterprises (Tongkun, Hengyi Petrochemical, Jiangsu Hongsheng, Xin Fengming, Jiangsu Xiangying, Zhejiang Shuang Tu, Southeast New Materials and Zhejiang Jiabao) jointly submitted a letter to the China Securities Regulatory Commission, which stated that

Another important reason for the turmoil caused by the listing of ethylene glycol futures is that downstream enterprises are worried about the soaring price of ethylene glycol. As soon as the news of the upcoming listing of ethylene glycol futures came out, many domestic suppliers began to hoard in large quantities, and foreign suppliers also increased their inventory in succession, thus reducing the market supply. It can be seen that once listed, the price will no longer be attractive to downstream enterprises.

Interest factor is the key?

Judging from the decentralization of ethylene glycol plant construction authority, new projects do not need the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission, and the construction of coal-based ethylene glycol projects is booming. As long as a project is good, it will soon lead to an imbalance between supply and demand. This is the result of disorderly competition without unified planning. A large amount of ethylene glycol in coal is related to the low coal price. When the price of coal is low, the deep processing of coal becomes more important. Technical maturity is no longer the key factor to consider, but economic benefit is the most important goal.

As a new route, technical level, equipment safety, environmental protection and product purity need to be solved step by step.
