The school was founded in 1902, formerly known as the National College of Western Studies of Shanxi University. After passing through the Engineering Department of Shanxi University and the Engineering Department of Shanxi University, it was independently established on 1953 and named Taiyuan University of Technology, directly under the Ministry of Higher Education. 1984 was renamed Taiyuan University of Technology. 1997 Taiyuan University of Technology and Shanxi Mining Institute directly under the Ministry of Coal founded by 1958 merged to form Taiyuan University of Technology.

The school has four campuses in Mingxiang, Yingxi, Huyu and Berlin, covering an area of 210.3 million square meters and a total construction area of10.69 million square meters.
