It depends on what fund you buy yourself. If it is a money fund, the underlying assets are government bonds, central bank bills, certificates of deposit and so on.

If it is a bond fund, it may be government bonds, corporate bonds and so on.

If it is a stock fund, then the underlying assets are stocks.

If it is a gold fund, the underlying asset is gold.
