1930 June 15 was born in Hiroshima prefecture. 1945, hirayama ikuo, 15 years old, became a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bomb incident. 1952 graduated from Tokyo Fine Arts School (now the only public art university in Japan). Since 1975, he has frequently visited China and held solo exhibitions. 1984 Vice President of China-Japan Cultural Exchange Association.

1986 was hired as an honorary professor by the Central Academy of Fine Arts. From 65438 to 0988, hirayama ikuo became a goodwill ambassador of UNESCO, mainly responsible for the rescue of world cultural heritage. 1989 served as the sixth president of Tokyo University of the Arts. 1990, donated100000 USD to set up the "Silk Road Fund" of UNESCO to finance the research of Dunhuang studies.

1992 was elected as the fourth president of Japan-China Friendship Association. From 65438 to 0994, hirayama ikuo donated 200 million yen to establish the Dunhuang Grottoes Protection Research Foundation in China. 1998 hirayama ikuo was awarded the Japanese Cultural Medal. In 2002, the Japanese government awarded him the "Cultural Exchange Contribution Award" in recognition of his outstanding contribution to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Japan.
