School of Mechanical Science and Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was founded in 1953, formerly known as department of mechanical engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. 1988 was renamed department of mechanical engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and 1993 was renamed School of Mechanical Science and Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. After the merger of schools in 2000, it has been used to this day.
At the beginning of the school, a group of elites from Wuhan University, Hunan University, Nanchang University and Guangxi University and a group of students from Europe, the United States, Japan and the former Soviet Union gathered together to work together from scratch, creating the embryonic form of the growth of the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering and laying the foundation for today's development.
With the growth of China's machinery industry and the unremitting efforts of several generations of "robots", today's College of Mechanical Science and Engineering has formed its own unique discipline advantages and school-running style, and gathered a large number of outstanding talents who enjoy high reputation in the field of machinery manufacturing at home and abroad. The development of the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering is the epitome of the growth of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Good software and hardware environment and rich academic atmosphere also make it known as one of the largest and strongest colleges in Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
The college now has 8 departments and 4 national research platforms, including State Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing Equipment and Technology, National Engineering Research Center of Digital Manufacturing Equipment, National CNC System Engineering Technology Research Center and National Enterprise Informatization Support Software Engineering Technology Research Center. It has two national basic teaching platforms, the National Mechanical Basic Course Teaching Base and the National Mechanical Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. There are/kloc-0 innovation groups of the National Natural Science Foundation, 2 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education and 2 national teaching teams. It has three experimental platforms for teaching and research, namely, the experimental center for mechanical basic courses, the experimental center for mechanical disciplines and the comprehensive experimental center for advanced manufacturing and equipment technology. Postdoctoral mobile stations 1 each, 6 doctoral programs, and master programs 10. Every year, the college enrolls undergraduates majoring in mechanical design, manufacturing and automation, industrial engineering, product design, measurement and control technology and instruments. There are nearly 2,000 undergraduates, 65,438 full-time master students and 400 full-time doctoral students. As an incubator in the field of science and technology industry, in the past ten years, the College has successively hatched two high-tech listed companies, resulting in a number of technology transformation platforms serving regional economic development represented by the Manufacturing Engineering Research Institute of Dongguan Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
