Chen Jiaying wrote a preface to Great Ideas in the West

The Great Works of the Western World is a series of 6 volumes edited by Encyclopedia Britannica Publishing House, which selected the brilliant masterpieces of western philosophy, literature, psychology and other humanities and social sciences and some natural sciences, covering the period from Homer to Samuel Beckett. The first two volumes of this series, Syntopicon, we call it "the Great Western Concept". It includes 12 concepts representing the most important characteristics of western culture, such as existence, democracy, art, etc., and it is intended to provide a general overview and subject index for the great works in the following volumes. Each chapter treats a big idea. His words are not a detailed analysis of this concept, but outline the basic outline of this concept and guide readers to read a number of great western works that support this concept. The Great Idea of the West can also be regarded as a collection of questions, and almost all the "philosophical questions" we care about are included here. Behind the general introduction of this book, there are hidden problems to be further discussed, and this book can just be used as a starting point for us to discuss, because this book firmly adheres to the basic explanation of these basic concepts. Thinking-loving friends, before and during in-depth thinking, understand the basic ideas of predecessors, which is of great help. Everyone's thoughts grow up in tradition. Today, most of our logical words are transplanted from the west. Without going deep into the western ideological tradition, we can't reason seriously.

In the spring of p>25, friends from Huaxia Publishing House discussed with me that I should be the editor-in-chief of the Chinese translation, and asked relevant experts and scholars to translate this great book and contribute it to Chinese readers. I know that my ability is low, and I am afraid of trouble. The editor-in-chief and the like have never dared to answer it. But this book is really fascinating. When I study and work in a foreign country, I will use the Great Works of the Western World from time to time. The first two volumes, that is, the Great Concept of the West, are necessary indexes; Reading alone is also very beneficial, and you can get a rough overall understanding of these big concepts. Translating it into Chinese readers will certainly promote academic development. After three words, I took it over my head.

After taking this job, I started to translate several chapters by myself and find a translator, which added a lot of hard work, needless to say. I have read all the translations, more than half of them have been carefully revised, and many of them have to be revised hastily because of lack of time. At first, the copyright owner promised to provide an electronic version, and I hope to post it on a website, and the translators will also post their own translations for colleagues to criticize and correct, so as to turn the translation process of this book into a process of learning from others. Unfortunately, the copyright party later said that the electronic version could not be provided because of damage. This made my original idea empty. Similar things didn't go well, and there were some. However, after more than two years of hard work, I finally got the results of more than one million words in front of me, which is naturally comforting. The completion of this book must first thank dozens of translators. Invited translators, look at the list of translators, and you will know that there are quite a few famous translators, such as Deng Zhenglai and Tong Shijun. I especially want to thank young translators such as Lu Ding, Zhou Lian and Zhang Butian. Either their Chinese and English are better than ours, or their work attitude is more serious. I think the overall level of translation by these young translators is not lower than that of their predecessors, and some of them have translated better. Chen Ximi, Chu Shuowei, Li Jingtao, Li Yupu, Wang Xiaoling and others of Huaxia Publishing House have devoted a lot of efforts to this book, from translators to manuscripts to layout styles to numerous representations with copyright owners. My cooperation with these publishers has always been mutual trust and understanding. Doing this, let me understand that the academic progress, half in the work of scholars, half in the silent efforts of publishers.
