as an important branch of post-modernism art, earth art had a particularly strong influence on modern landscape design in 198s and 199s. Designers of this era have invariably reflected the practical application of earth art expression in their works. One of the early pioneers was issam Nuguchi issam, who had no professional education in landscape design. In 1922, by chance, Nuguchi met the famous sculptor Gutzon Borglum, the designer of Mount Rushmore Monument. After working in Borglum's studio for a period of time, with the support of the Art Foundation, Nuguchi began to travel around Europe and worked as an assistant in the studio of the Parisian sculptor Constantin Brancusi for one year. In 1929 and 1931, he toured China and Japan successively. These experiences of studying abroad make Nuguqi's future works influenced by both oriental culture and European culture, and his works are more distinctive. Since the 196s, Nuguqi, who has always had a soft spot for sculpture, began to try to create a landscape with the unique sculpture treatment method of the earth art combined with the actual use function. His masterpiece of this period is the Future Park located at the headquarters of IBM. The works use natural materials such as earth mountains, stones, plants and water to form a huge sculpture park. This work implies three basic creative methods of earth art different from ordinary sculpture art: first, choose a large-scale venue to create, the work and the venue are integrated, and the venue is the medium to express the work; Second, direct use of natural materials for artistic expression; Thirdly, all or part of the artwork has an interactive relationship with some natural phenomena such as tides, wind, sunrise and sunset, and the process of this interactive change has been artistically treated. In Nuguqi's later works, stone is always the soul skeleton of space. The design of sunken plaza, the biography library of Yale University, is a typical example. Pyramid-shaped and wheel-shaped stones form an empty square space. Stone modeling is a metaphor for the past, present and future development trend of the earth. Nuguqi's works are unique in the field of modern landscape because of their symbolic inspiration.
