Speaking of Argentina, there may be two groups that are familiar with it.
One is not unfamiliar to most football fans, because she has the world champion Maradona and now has Messi.
Another one is that Argentina’s tango dance is world-famous.
But if you don’t like football or tango, you may really know nothing about this country. Why?
First, this country is too far away from us. Although we are both on the earth, the two countries are not on the same side of the earth, and they are diagonally opposite from north to south.
Second, this country is not prominent and basically has no voice on the world stage.
Third, because of the distance, we have not been very close to each other in recent years, so whether we are around or in the dissemination of information, there are not many people around Argentina, and it is normal to not be familiar with it.
Flags of China and Argentina In fact, Argentina became independent from the Spanish colonies in 1810, so the citizens of this country are mainly descendants of Spanish and Italians, and the language is of course mainly Spanish.
Currently, there are about 120,000 overseas Chinese living in this country. They are mainly engaged in trade and commerce. They are mainly concentrated in core provinces or cities such as the capital Buenos Aires.
The reason why I wrote this article is because their president came to our side to participate in the Winter Olympics this time, and the two sides held a series of consultations. In the communiqué between the two sides, a point of view was clearly stated:
The island we support belongs to Argentina!
For a while, the content written on the white paper was immediately taken out by the British diplomat (Foreign Minister) to explain the matter, but we did not offend them at all. We just asked a staff member of the consulate to give an answer.
Official response For a time, the word Falklands entered the public consciousness. When it comes to Falklands, many people born in the 80s, 90s and 00s may have basically no understanding of it, but for those born in the 60s and 70s, they have more knowledge.
Why?
Because for this island, Argentina and the United Kingdom also fought a war, commonly known as the "Battle of the Falklands." The final result was that Argentina surrendered and the United Kingdom occupied the Falklands.
But this war that took place in the early days of the Cold War is still worth exploring.
It was early 1982. The domestic situation in Argentina was not very good, and the internal situation in the United Kingdom was not very good either. Moreover, the British Prime Minister at that time was a woman named Thatcher, who had just taken office (now deceased).
The then Argentine president wanted to take an action to boost his prestige and also give Argentina's internally chaotic economy a shot in the arm.
So the staff and supporters at the time suggested taking the Falklands back.
The situation at that time was that the Falklands were occupied by the United Kingdom, but the number of residents and troops on the island was very small, so once Argentina was dispatched, it was basically occupied without much effort.
After the incident occurred, the United Kingdom did not immediately fight back. Instead, it focused on pressure and consultation on international occasions and mobilization in the early stage of the war.
However, Argentina at that time did not see the world situation clearly and was not fully prepared to occupy the Falklands. At that time, Argentina had serious economic problems and many internal problems. It could be said that it was experiencing internal and external difficulties.
Argentinian Flag As for the Falklands, the British did occupy this place for many years. Although they did not manage it much before, once it was taken back by Argentina, they became nervous, so the war was about to break out.
There are three main reasons for this: First, Thatcher took office not long ago, and if no action is taken, it may affect her tenure and the interests behind it.
Second, at that time, Britain and the United States were engaged in comprehensive competition with the former Soviet Union, and it was already a critical period of the Cold War.
Third, the European and American countries at that time had many problems of their own. Since there was such an opportunity for them to unite, especially the NATO countries, it was also a good training opportunity.
Fourth, this is about the face of the British DG, so it has to be done forcefully.
Compared with Argentina's carelessness and lack of strategic and tactical preparation, the British are indeed experienced in a country where the sun never sets. They are very calm. While engaging in a war of words, they secretly collect intelligence, especially Argentina's military intelligence, while seeking European and American
Support from other countries, especially the United States and France.
Take a look at the map. The Falkland Islands are basically next to Argentina, but how far are they from the United Kingdom?
13,000 kilometers. If the British really want to take back the Falklands, they need to take it seriously, because the battle line is too long. If a confrontation situation occurs and the winner cannot be determined, the British will undoubtedly lose.
When the diplomacy and war of words failed, the British were actually not prepared to negotiate with Argentina, so they stalled for time and prepared for backup. At that time, the Argentines did not have time or thought to negotiate. Anyway, there were no British and British people on the Falklands at that time.
The military was therefore focused on dealing with domestic affairs. Of course, some countries at the time still supported Argentina and provided intelligence. The military was nothing more than deployment on the Falklands.
