"I have been thinking about how to improve Internet services and give front-line teachers more time to inspire students. If we can provide a set of teaching content with better quality by means of science and technology, it may release the time of front-line teachers and let them focus more on students' personality, behavior and mentality. "65438+February 1 1, when attending the first" One Dan Award "summit forum in Hongkong, Liu Chiping, president of Tencent, put forward the above imagination.

Liu Chiping believes that the key to education is to shape students' personality, help them develop an attitude of continuous learning and cultivate their ability to solve practical problems. Only teachers can do these things, but machines can't.

The "One Dan Award" was founded by Mr. Chen Yidan, one of the main founders of Tencent, on 20 16, aiming at commending and supporting organizations and individuals who have promoted educational innovation and made long-term contributions, so as to enhance human welfare through education.

At this award ceremony, Liu Chiping had an in-depth exchange with Peter Lewis, the host of Radio Television Hong Kong, on topics such as Tencent's global education investment concept and how Tencent integrated technology into the classroom through social platforms.

The following are the main points of the conversation between Liu Chi and Peter Lewis.

0 1, education has changed due to scientific and technological progress.

Peter Lewis: We have many international participants here. Can you introduce Tencent to them?

Liu Chiping: In the past 19 years, we started from socializing and gradually expanded our business into games and other fields. At present, Tencent is the largest game platform, social media platform, music platform, video platform and literature platform in China. At the same time, online payment platforms, such as WeChat payment, have also developed. We also provide a series of enabling services, including our cloud services, security services, browsers and so on. We also invested in more than 600 companies around the world, and we participated in and helped them grow.

Peter Lewis: Everyone knows the importance of education, which plays an important role in one's life. In Hong Kong and South Korea, many people have got rid of poverty through education. What role do you think education plays in achieving this goal?

Liu Chiping: This is a very big topic. I don't know if I can answer this question comprehensively.

I think education is an important way of public service, especially for children. It is also very helpful for society to let them learn professional skills and shape their outlook on life from an early age.

In the era of new technology, I think the most important thing is that education must be very advanced and keep up with the pace of scientific and technological development. On the one hand, students can gain a better learning experience through technology. On the other hand, through constant contact with technology, such as learning programming languages, children can be prepared for the arrival of new technologies.

This also requires enterprises to use their own technology to solve problems in the field of education and promote the development of the entire education system. From Tencent's experience, as a technology company, we are more concerned about how to focus on the educational resources provided to users by promoting the development of cloud technology.

In addition, as a father, when I observe the children's education now, compared with my own education more than 20 years ago, I feel that we have not made a breakthrough change in the level of "content centralization". Why can't technology provide better educational content and better user experience for children? If we can concentrate educational resources, we can relieve teachers' bondage to some extent and let them do more important things, such as more customized education for different children. Some children need more encouragement, and some children may need moderate pressure. In a word, with the thinking mode of technology companies, the education system can be improved as a whole.

Peter Lewis: Technology is indeed subversive. Many industries have undergone earth-shaking changes because of the development of technology. However, education has not changed for a long time. We educate our children in the same way in the same building, which also shows that there are many possibilities for change in education. So, what can technology do for education?

Liu Chiping: Educators all over the world have come up with many good ideas in this regard, which is the original intention of Charles (Chen Yidan) to create the "One Dan Award" and spread it to all corners of the world. Let people realize that these excellent educators and researchers have such good ideas and concepts that we can actually use them interchangeably. I think, due to the development of technology, education has changed on some levels. For example, we cooperate with many companies to develop multimedia and online education. Through the online learning platform, I hope to solve the problem of uneven distribution of educational resources.

For example, we have invested in a software called VIPKID, and American professional English teachers can teach China students online. Without online learning, this kind of education is difficult to achieve. We also have a project in India called BYJU'S, which can realize the content of interactive teaching. Children there can use their parents' smartphones for online interactive learning. In my opinion, new technology has brought about some changes in education. Therefore, we need to continue to innovate and develop new technologies to serve the whole education field.

02. Liberate teachers with technology and let teachers shape students' personality.

Peter Lewis: Which of the following options do you think is the most important for education reform?

(1) Carefully designed policies or projects;

(2) Effective teacher training;

(3) Policy support;

(4) technical empowerment;

(5) Give the school more autonomy;

(6) Relevant funds and financial support.

In the online voting, 38% of the audience chose effective teacher training. Judging from the results, the second answer is more recognized by the public. Some people may think that technology can replace teachers, which is not the same thing as what you said. You are talking about using technology to support teachers' teaching, but not the so-called "robot teacher".

Liu Chiping: That's an interesting question. If I had to choose, I would choose the first two options. To some extent, it reflects our different attitudes towards computer science. Machines are more responsible for repetitive work, but people can provide personalized services. From the perspective of education, if machines can design better courses and content, they can liberate front-line teachers, who can think more from the perspective of people without considering too much teaching content. In my opinion, education is not only to pass on knowledge, so that students can get higher scores. A large part of the responsibility of education is to shape students' character and cultivate their mentality and motivation for continuous learning, which machines can't do. If we have more efficient machines and can better train front-line teachers, it will be a powerful combination.

Peter Lewis: Many people say that if there is not enough money to invest in education, there will be various problems. Low-income countries invest more GDP in education, but the effect is not as good as that of developed countries. In this regard, can a big enterprise like Tencent give support, such as investing in some educational institutions and training classrooms? What role do you think Tencent can play in it?

Liu Chiping: At first, I thought that education was only the responsibility of the government. In government expenditure, education may account for 15% to 20% of the total expenditure. In my opinion, education is worth increasing our investment, because education is related to the future of the country.

As an enterprise, Tencent has mainly achieved the following aspects:

First of all, Tencent tries to provide a platform for educational institutions to impart knowledge to students more efficiently. A very important mission of online education is to provide a platform for autonomous learning. We have a platform called Tencent Classroom, which provides cloud services to some educational institutions and individuals. They can put the teaching items and teaching contents online, and let them freely choose whether to charge or not. I see many students learn new design methods, new programming techniques and even how to raise sheep through our platform.

In addition, Tencent can also provide new educational solutions for primary and secondary education.

Finally, I hope to participate in educational public welfare undertakings through Tencent Foundation. For example, we will support college graduates to go to rural areas and devote themselves to local education. We will raise a lot of money to help education in remote rural areas.

In the future, we should learn how to communicate with computers.

Peter Lewis: What do you think is the most important skill that students need when they leave university? What kind of abilities can they have to become better leaders and employees of enterprises in China?

Liu Chiping: First of all, their attitude and personality. I hope some employees are full of motivation and enthusiasm for what they do.

Secondly, I hope they can have the ability of self-study, constantly motivate themselves and improve themselves. I hope they are not afraid of this problem. When they see this problem, they will solve it.

Third, I hope they can cooperate and cooperate with each other. I hope young people can become excellent team members and have good communication skills.

In addition, we are a technology company, and we hope that students can accept new knowledge and high technology. This is why we should make programming one of the compulsory courses for all students, just as language is a tool for us to communicate with others at present. In the future, in the era of artificial intelligence and robotics, we need to learn how to communicate with computers. If you don't know programming, you can't deal with computers, robots and even artificial intelligence.

Peter Lewis: Are these abilities that you value influenced by China culture? What's the difference between this selection method and multinational companies? Will these differences affect the internationalization of China companies?

Liu Chiping: I think companies in China are obviously looking for people who know the China market. Because China is a unique country, it is very big and is in a period of rapid development. Many things are changing rapidly. We hope you can get to know China better. For young people in Hong Kong, it is also a good opportunity to go to Shenzhen to learn about the China market, which Tencent hopes to promote. Headquartered in Shenzhen, the service covers all of China, and we hope to go to sea more. If everyone can bring their global vision to China and understand the China market, it will be a win-win combination.

Peter Lewis: In the past twenty years, science and technology have changed China. Can China schools provide these people with relevant scientific and technological resources so that they can apply new technologies as soon as they appear?

Liu Chiping: I think so. China students' pursuit of a sense of accomplishment drives them to work and study very hard. Many young people in China are self-motivated and work long hours every day. They hope to work hard to improve their own capabilities on the one hand and product quality and user experience on the other.

Therefore, I think one of the advantages of China enterprises is that they have such excellent employees. They are enterprising, diligent and pragmatic, and can learn quickly. They are willing to make extra efforts to improve the quality of products and services. Of course, what China lacks at present is the experience of contacting overseas markets. We need to know the needs of customers in other countries around the world. Such skills need to be gradually established. We need a generation who will not only grow up in China, but also experience the products and services of other countries and understand the needs of users in other countries.

Technology can provide customized and personalized services for students.

Peter Lewis: Do you think big data, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and other high technologies can better promote the development of education?

Liu Chiping: That's for sure. Cloud technology can better allocate educational resources. If we can collect how each student uses different teaching content, we can improve the quality of content and provide customized services through big data. The specific situation of each student is different, so applying these technologies to education can realize teaching students in accordance with their aptitude and provide customized and personalized services for different students.

On the other hand, technologies such as artificial intelligence can do some repetitive work. We have the technology to help teachers correct students' homework, so teachers have more time to do other things. The most important thing is that educators should have the motivation to learn new technologies and provide students with a better learning experience.

Peter Lewis: We have noticed that this is actually a good investment field, and online education is a market full of growth potential, right?

Liu Chiping: Yes, we mainly look at investment opportunities from two aspects. On the one hand, as a technology company, we hope to provide some services to scientific research institutions so that they can better educate students, such as cloud services and payment services. Our income in this area may be low, but it is a very important thing for us and the whole society.

On the other hand, online education is really a good business opportunity. We have invested in several private companies to provide related basic training, such as extracurricular training in English and other subjects.
