Guangzhou Middle School: Chenghuang Temple was once its school property.
A middle school that can be named after the word "Guangzhou" should be a very powerful school. Following Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Middle School also broke ground last year. In fact, in history, there was a "Guangzhou Middle School" in Guangzhou. Yuehua Road is named after it, Guangzhong Road is named after it, and even Chenghuang Temple was once its school property. This time I will talk about "Guangzhou Middle School" in history.

The predecessor of this middle school is Yuehua College.

In the Qing Dynasty, various families, clans and power groups in Guangdong established academies in Guangzhou, and gradually formed the most famous academy communities in Guangdong along Beijing Road, Education Road and Xihu Road. During the period of 1755 (twenty years of Qianlong), many businessmen's children had no place for further study. Businessmen such as Fan Shiqi, secretary of salt transportation, advocated the construction of a college, so they donated a college near the back street of the then Chief Secretary (now Guangzhong Road), which is Yuehua College.

Rich businessmen from all walks of life donated money to set up this academy, so most of the students are rich businessmen's children. Due to the establishment of Yuehua Academy, when building roads, the nearby road is also called Yuehua Road. During Guangxu period, Ding Renchang was employed as the dean, and the college curriculum was reformed. Besides four books, classics and history are added to the course. For a time, the fame became bigger and bigger, and the number of students increased.

The original school site was on Jixiang Road.

1898 (the 24th year of Guangxu reign) In May, the general order of "The Qing Emperor instructed all provincial capitals to change prefectures and counties to set up schools for academies" was promulgated, stipulating that all local academies should be changed into schools. 1903 (the 29th year of Guangxu), Yuehua Academy was closed. 1902 (in the 28th year of Guangxu), Yangcheng College was closed (address is Longzang Street, Xihu Road today). Gong Xinzhan, the magistrate of guangzhou fu, organized guangzhou fu Lizhong School, and used the rental interest of Yangcheng College as the fund of guangzhou fu Lizhong School.

Initially, the school purchased land in Mazhuang, Tianguan Zhanjiayuan, north of the city, including all ponds and vegetable fields. Zhan Jiayuan is the former site of Zhan Ganquan (Zhan Ruoshui) villa, but construction has not started for a long time due to insufficient funds.

Gong Xinzhan's successor, Shen Chuanyi, borrowed Guangfu Yixue from Bian Wei Street (now the southern section of Jixiang Road) as a school building. Shen Chuanyi also mobilized businessmen to donate money to set up education. For example, Zhou Dongsheng, Zhang Rongxuan and Zhang Bishi all donated huge sums of money to establish Guangzhou Fuli Middle School. 1903 (the 29th year of Guangxu), Lu erkui was hired as a supervisor (that is, equivalent to the current principal). In March of that year, 80 people were recruited and 40 people were selected. On March 8/KLOC-0, the opening ceremony was held.

Guangzhou Fuli Middle School was renamed Guangzhou Middle School.

1904 (30th year of Guangxu), officially allocated Yuehua Academy as the site of Guangzhou Fuli Middle School.

1912 65438+10/9 The Ministry of Education of Nanjing Provisional Government promulgated the Interim Measures for General Education, and the school was renamed as a school to supervise the change of principals. Soon, Guangzhou Fuli Middle School was changed to Guangzhou Middle School.

After the Revolution of 1911, Guangzhou Middle School is still an influential school. In my youth, I studied in Guangzhou Middle School. Because Guangzhou Middle School is famous, when the road was opened in the 1920s and 1930s, a road called Guangzhong Road appeared here.

Chenghuang Temple is produced by Guangzhou Middle School.

1903 is the time for Sizhu (the person in charge of incense in the temple) to bid for the guangzhou fu Triennial Chenghuang Temple. In addition to paying extra salary every year, the bidder also has a service fee, which is shared by the magistrate and officials. Gong Xinzhan, the magistrate, donated all the service fees of the Town God Temple as the funds of Guangzhou R&F Middle School, and designated the annual salary of the Town God Temple as the tuition fee of Guangzhou R&F Middle School.

1920, due to the need of municipal road expansion, most of the buildings in the Chenghuang Temple were demolished, and only the existing white pavilion and main hall were kept, which were managed by Guangzhou Middle School, and the rent was collected as a supplement to the school tuition. 1923 official confiscation of temple property. After winning over Guangzhou Middle School, the Municipal Finance Bureau agreed that the golden pedestal of the main hall and the courtyard in front of the hall should still be managed by Guangzhou Middle School, and the rent should be charged as a supplement to the school tuition.
