In the mid-1970s, the demand for secondary school places in Hong Kong surged, and the Education Department planned to convert some existing government primary school buildings into subsidized secondary schools to solve the problem.
After negotiating with the Education Department, the General Affairs Office of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong was willing to take over the renovated school building of the Shek Gap Mei Government Primary School on Nanchang Street and build an 18-class boys and girls grammar school. The reconstruction plan was immediately launched. Under the appointment of Bishop Hu Zhenzhong, the school board of directors was formed by deputy bishop Lin Zhuowei, the late Father Yu Yuanzhi, school supervisor Father Yu Shangshi, and principal Chu Fufu to prepare for the establishment of the school.
Since the renovation project has not yet been completed in September, the six classrooms on the top floor of Baitian Catholic Primary School will be used for classes in the first month of the school’s opening. At that time, only four classes of Form One were opened, three of which were for five-year subsidized degrees, and one class was for three-year subsidized degrees. At the beginning of the school's opening, only five teachers were hired. Together with the principal and a secretary, there were only seven people. The equipment was not enough, and it was a difficult operation.
The renovation project was completed in October, and classes were officially moved to the current school site. It shares the same school building with the Shixiamei Government Primary School and also hired an additional laboratory assistant. An opening ceremony was held on March 12, with Bishop Hu Zhenzhong invited to be ordained. Former Director of Education, Mr. Li Yueting (then Assistant Director), officiated and held an open day.
In September, according to the original plan, it will be developed into 20 classes. Art, design and technology, and home economics were added as elective subjects to Form 4 classes, and students will take public examinations in 1983. In March, it was planned to teach social studies in the mother tongue and complete the junior high school course within two years.
In May, students from the school took the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination for the first time. The results of the annual examination were ideal. 87,22% of the students obtained grades E or above in five subjects (including Chinese, English and Mathematics). 40 students obtained excellent results and 223 students obtained good results. Among them, Tan Hanguang received 7 honors and 1 Good results.
In July, with the support of parents and students, the school successfully applied to the Education Department to open a liberal arts class for Form 6. Students took the public examination in 1985. Major maintenance works were carried out during the summer vacation this year, including repainting of the interior and exterior walls and replacement of cables and wires. The first graduation ceremony will be held on March 13, with Father Fok Li-yi, the bishop’s educational representative of the Diocese of Hong Kong, invited to officiate.
In September, the school opened a sixth form liberal arts class. He applied to the Education Department and was approved to open a science class for Form 6, and took the public examination in 1987. The school board discussed with the Education Department the expansion of the school building and consulted staff on the plan.
In July, the design and technology teaching department was expanded, with the area increased by about one-third, which can accommodate more equipment for students in the HKCEE class. Part of the area allocated by the school affairs office was converted into a computer room, which can accommodate 20 students. From 1984 to 1985, a computer subject was added to Form 4 students as one of the elective subjects for taking the HKCEE. The same year was also the first time the school held Teachers’ Day.
Chen Tianlong, a classmate of Form 5 science class, achieved excellent results in the college entrance examination and enrolled in the preparatory course of Elizabeth Middle School (because the school did not offer subject courses that year). Afterwards, he studied pure mathematics, applied mathematics, physics and chemistry. With excellent results in subject A, he was awarded the Lee Shau Kee Scholarship to study for a degree at the University of Oxford in the UK. In July, the asphalt surface of the playground was resurfaced into a smooth concrete surface, reducing the chance of students getting injured while playing sports.

The Student Union and Senate were established in September. The plan to move the school to Fanling in 1993-1994 was implemented in June.
