Through its business planning, GEF supports developing countries and countries with economies in transition to carry out activities in key areas such as biodiversity, climate change, national waters, ozone layer depletion, land degradation and persistent organic pollutants, and achieves global benefits. Since its inception in 1991, GEF has provided about $4 billion in grants to more than 14 developing countries and countries with economies in transition through more than 1, projects, and attracted $12 billion in project financing from various sources. In August 22, 32 donor countries pledged to provide nearly $3 billion to GEF for GEF activities in the following four years.
