The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by Resolution 25 of the 44th United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989. It is the first legally binding international agreement to protect children's rights.
Effective September 2, 1990.
As of October 2015, there were 196 parties.
The Convention aims to create a good growth environment for children from all over the world.
Since the founding of the United Nations, the well-being and rights of children have always been a major concern of the United Nations.
One of the first actions taken by the United Nations was the establishment of UNICEF on December 11, 1946.
In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations General Assembly recognized that children must receive special care and assistance.
Since then, the United Nations has always emphasized the protection of children's rights in general international treaties such as the International Convention on Human Rights and in documents specifically focused on children's rights, namely the "Declaration on the Rights of the Child" on November 20, 1959.
In view of the fact that the Declaration on the Rights of the Child does not have the effect of treaty law, it has become increasingly necessary to provide treaty law protection for children's rights, especially in the process of preparing for the "International Year of the Child". This necessity has become increasingly obvious.
At the 1978 meeting of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Professor Adam Lopasa of Poland (later chairman of the Convention Drafting Working Group) initiated the drafting of a Convention on the Rights of the Child.
