It is a key university under the national 211 and 985 projects.

The school was formed from the Military Engineering College of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (hereinafter referred to as "Harbin Military Engineering") founded in 1953. It has gone through development stages such as Artillery Engineering College, East China College of Engineering, and East China College of Technology. In 1993, it was renamed Nanjing University of Science and Technology.

As of April 2019, the school covers an area of ??3,118 acres, with a building area of ??1.08 million square meters; it has 20 colleges and has co-founded two independent colleges; it has a collection of more than 2.5 million Chinese and foreign books and documents; and 30,000 students of various types.

There are more than 1,000 international students; there are more than 3,200 faculty members and more than 1,900 full-time teachers.

The school has the authority to review the overall qualifications of professors and to review and approve the qualifications of doctoral supervisors.
