Yunnan Normal University was established by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Yunnan Province. Its predecessor was the National Southwest Associated University Teachers College in 1938.

In 1946, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University, which formed the Southwest Associated University, were demobilized and returned to the north. Their normal college stayed in Kunming and was named National Kunming Normal University. In 1950, it was renamed Kunming Normal University. In 1984, it was renamed Yunnan Normal University. In 1999
