Mathematics competitions held in teenagers have a long history in the world. It is generally believed that it began in 1894 with a mathematics competition organized by the Hungarian mathematics community in memory of the mathematician Ertwás Roland.

Comparing mathematics competitions with sports competitions, the former Soviet Union is associated with ancient Greece, the birthplace of science. She called the mathematics competition the Mathematical Olympiad.

In the first half of the 20th century, different countries successively organized various types of mathematics competitions at all levels, first in schools, then in regions, and later nationwide, gradually forming a pyramid-style competition system.

The further development of competition from various countries will naturally create the necessary conditions for the formation of the highest level of international competition.

It was founded in 1975 by the Mathematics Committee of the University of Budapest, Hungary, and the first World Mathematical Olympiad (WMO) was held in Hungary in August 1978.

With the expansion of influence, the number of participating countries and regions gradually increased. In 1998, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the joint efforts of the Japan Youth Intellectual Development Fund and 20 large enterprises, the headquarters of the association moved to Tokyo, Japan. There are currently more than 60 teams participating in this event.

After more than 30 years of development, the operation of the World Mathematical Olympiad has gradually been institutionalized and standardized, with a set of established rules and regulations followed by previous hosts.

In 2005, after discussion and research among the member countries of the association, it was decided to hold the World Junior Olympics Mathematics Competition in Tokyo, Japan in 2008.

In 2006, we received an application from the China Regional Organizing Committee and were approved to join the association in August 2007.
