Tata was born Amita Marie Young in Thailand on December 14, 1980. Her father is American and her mother is Thai. She is their only daughter.

At the age of 11, Tata defeated 5,300 competitors and won the international category of the Thailand National Youth Singing Competition with the song "Catch Me I'm Falling".
