What problems should I avoid when applying for a foreign doctor and porcelain letter?
Do you have these problems in your magnetic application letter?

Due to my research direction and management position, I receive more than 65,438+00 magnetic letters almost every week, mainly from China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Middle East and the Netherlands. It is estimated that most of the magnetic signals are polite because of the existence of templates. I was deeply impressed by the following questions:

1) Send a set of magnetic letters to people in the same university.

The most irritating thing is that I received a sincere magnetic letter and was about to call for details. The result/kloc-0 was forwarded by several colleagues within an hour, saying, "I think this applicant's background is more suitable for your research group." Or completely uninterested in deleting the magnetic letter. At noon, two or three colleagues ran over and said, "I want this applicant!" " "

Dude, send magnetic letters in groups, not to people in the same department! In the first case, it hurts the boss's heart; What about the second one? Still want to provoke infighting, play with two peaches and kill three scholars?

So remember: don't have more than two bosses in the same university.

2) Dishonest, exaggerating achievements

Generally, you say that you have published several general articles, and the boss is too lazy to check the details; However, it is said in CV that three IEEE journals have been published. When your eyes shine, look what he did. And you can't find anything. I called his tutor and found that I had submitted three articles in IEEE transactions, all of which were rejected.

I don't think such an applicant will stay in the academic circle for long.

3) Don't reply to the boss's letter.

This question is mainly aimed at China applicants. Maybe it's because everyone is used to using QQ, WeChat and so on. They didn't realize that e-mail from many foreign universities is the official communication channel.

For interested candidates, many bosses will reply by email immediately after seeing the magnetic letter.

For interested postdoctoral applicants, I often reply within 2 minutes after reading the magnetic letter, "Our group has no funds to hire you as a postdoctoral fellow now, but if you want to be a visiting scholar for 3 months, I can still provide support."

As a result, many applicants are like mud cows in the sea and have no response. Even if you are not interested in me, politeness won't kill you at all! The magnetic letters are too long and are suppressed. Can a reply kill you?

In fact, the boss rarely directly recruits unfamiliar people to be postdoctoral fellows for 2 or 3 years, and usually works for RA or visiting scholars for 2 or 3 months. Just try it.

4) The setting of magnetic letters has no pertinence at all.

If you change the magnetic object to another name, this letter can still be used.

What is the correct magnetic posture?

Let me give two examples of postdoctoral magnetic letters:

Idaho (short for Idaho)

Dear Dr. XXX,

My name is XXX, and I am writing this letter to ask about the possibility of obtaining a postdoctoral position in your institution. I received my doctorate from XXX University in June, XXX. My doctoral thesis is entitled "XXXXXXX".

My research interests focus on xxxxxx and system engineering. My doctoral thesis focuses on XXX in the form of xxxx. I have published XXX papers in SCI, XXX papers in EI, and one paper is being revised.

With years of rich experience in operational research and XXXXXX, I have mastered solving fuzzy XXXXXX. With the in-depth understanding of basic theoretical knowledge and technology related to XXXXXX, and thanks to my research activities, I have a strong academic foundation in XXXXXX and XXXXXXXX. In addition, I also participated in several xxxxx projects, which gave me rich engineering experience.

I believe I am a xxxxxxx and an excellent collaborator with excellent communication and writing skills. In addition, I believe that exciting discoveries usually come from multidisciplinary research, and training opportunities in your laboratory will help me make progress. I would appreciate it if you could give me a chance.

Attached is my resume, including my research interests and contact information. If necessary, I can send you a copy of the materials. I am very willing to answer any questions you have about my application and research. I look forward to your reply.

sincerely

Two.

Dear Dr. XXX,

My name is XXX XXX, and I am writing this letter to find the opportunity to be a postdoctoral fellow in your team. Thank you very much for your advice.

I received my doctor's degree in XXX, and now I am a teacher and tutor of master students in XXX University. From XXXX of that year, I was a member of XXXX, and from XXX to now, I am XXXX.

I have published many papers and monographs, and presided over many research projects, such as the "XXXXX" project funded by XXXXXX Department and the "XXXXX" scientific research project of XXXXXX.

I have a strong passion for XXX XXX, and I have a positive attitude in collaborative learning research, and I am eager to make positive changes in online technology application analysis. I earnestly hope that you will consider my application and give me an opportunity to improve my academic and research abilities.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

yours respectfully/sincerely

There are no obvious loopholes in the content and English of the whole letter. But in fact, the effect is not good, because:

A) Most bosses will look at it first. What does this set of magnets have to do with me? You introduced yourself. I know you are very nice, but are you familiar with my laboratory? Do you know what I'm doing here? How can your skills and knowledge help my laboratory? There is nothing related to me in the whole article. Why should I take the time to read your attached resume? Delete it!

B) if you are a doctoral student, you can raise the training.

Opportunity, originally a doctor is a training process; But for postdocs, bosses generally want you to come at the drop of a hat. Besides, why does the boss need to pay you for help?

Do you promote greatness or improve yourself?

C) The last question is that from the boss's point of view, finding a postdoctoral fellow is actually a seller's market. There are often bosses next to excellent doctoral graduates begging to say, come to me as a postdoctoral fellow, and the boss with great energy may directly track down the tenure.

Location. The boss finally got the research funding, of course, hoping to find a post-doctoral master. Even if you have so many levels, you can't be a beggar, so be careful with your words if you can give me a chance. If there is a level, you still have to put on a shelf; Don't condescend if you are not good enough.

In fact, whether you apply for a doctorate or a postdoctoral degree, magnetism can be very simple and straightforward, especially if you can get familiar with your boss's magnetism and ask him to write back to you and ask for details, then the goal will be achieved.

Let's look at two positive examples:

The following letter is thousands of miles away from the template, but I called him directly to ask him about it. One of the keys is that he read the website of our research group and knew what our research group did and what its selling point was.

Dear Dr. XXXX,

I am a student of XXXXX, majoring in XXXXX. I am a top student and will graduate this year1February.

I

I plan to study as a graduate student in XXXXX, with emphasis on XXXXX.

When I was working in XXXX, I was always exploring the graduate program of XXXX.

I'm particularly interested in your research interest,

XXXX。

I hope you don't mind my contacting you, but I really want to contact you.

Ask whether to accept doctoral students at present. If you are,

Would you like to chat with me for a while by email? I've explored

Details of your website, it seems to be a very suitable one for me.

Because it emphasizes XXXX.

I know you are busy, so I appreciate your reply. Thank you very much,

sincerely

Let's look at a group of magnetic letters from Indian students. The letter is very touching, but perhaps this is the unified template of IIT in India, because I can receive many letters of this structure at some time every year. In fact, the content is still very attractive.

Dear Professor XXXXX,

I read your paper "XXXXXXXXXXXXX", and this experience is huge and rich.

Listen, I know your wonderful article, but who knows if you read it or not? )

I am a preparatory student at Indian Institute of Technology.

Technology (IIT) XXXX, India is studying for my bachelor's and master's degree in XXXX.

I learned about your research while browsing your personal data.

Work.

I have a lot of research experience in the past.

Including at Princeton University (USA), IBM

(Niu School has experienced a period of time, creating an atmosphere of robbing people: you don't want me, someone wants me. )

I hope to engage in a research project under your guidance and/or in other ways.

I will be very happy, even if I can help you with anything that is currently going on.

Projects during XXX period. I have the interest and enthusiasm to carry it out.

Productive research to improve and utilize my skills, and

Make positive contributions to the research in these fields. I think

My efforts and new ideas will be right.

Project/research topic requirements.

I will be helpful to your work: maybe there will be new ideas.

I tried to contact you a few months ago, but there were some problems.

My email server makes it difficult to receive mail.

I sent you an email a few months ago, but you ignored me. Forget it, I'll give you a step down, saying that maybe my university email server is not powerful: I feel guilty for my boss and you ignore me! Actually, the boss doesn't remember whether he received it or not. He usually deletes it, right? )

If you need more information, I'll be happy to provide it. my

I enclose my resume for your reading.

Thank you for your consideration and look forward to receiving your reply on this matter.

In all fairness, this envelope magnetic signal belongs to the exemplary level. However, because almost everyone in IIT has this routine, many bosses are tired of watching it, so you should use it carefully. According to this train of thought, adapt a film with China characteristics.
