For many years, Hou Shiming has always dreamed of going to China for the first batch of Tsinghua University for further study. However, in the years when he struggled for his ideal, in the winter of 1956, the school teacher solemnly suggested that he could go to military professional colleges after graduation and make contributions to the national defense cause of the motherland. After careful consideration, Hou Shiming gave up his personal choice, resolutely responded to the call of the school, obeyed the arrangement of the school, and proudly applied for the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. At that time, China's national defense industry was weak and its scientific and technological level was relatively backward. Under the background of lack of technology, Hou Shiming's team is conscientious and innovative, and under the encouragement of the national "power first" policy, they strive to break through the technical difficulties of solid motors.

In the late 1960s, in the formulation of China's development plan for solid strategic missiles and the selection of the first launch models, Hou Shiming boldly put forward an innovative idea of suspending the development of models with little development potential at that time, taking China-Cheng Qian ground missiles as a breakthrough; In the mid-1970s, he twice reported to Zhang Aiping, Qian Xuesen and other leaders the ideas of solidification and motorization that adapted to the national conditions at that time. In the mid-1980s, he wrote a proposal about improving a certain model, which got the attention of Zhang Aiping. In the 1980s, shortly after the failure of a certain type of underwater launch test, Hou Shiming's four departments faced unprecedented pressure. At that time, Hou Shiming was appointed as the deputy director of the four departments, in charge of technical work, and was later appointed as the deputy chief designer of this model by the commission of science, technology and industry for national defense. Under pressure, there was no way out. After careful analysis, he quickly organized and carried out a series of large-scale experimental studies, which laid a solid technical foundation for the success of subsequent experiments.

In the subsequent underwater launch test, he personally disembarked as a member of the test task force and the youngest deputy chief designer, and was fully responsible for the handling and decision-making of underwater launch technical problems. With a thorough understanding of technology, he correctly handled the abnormal situation before launch. Two consecutive test flights of a certain model were a complete success. After the unexpected failure of the third telemetry bomb, this young scientific research team, who had never tasted failure, was like a thunderbolt in the clear sky and the atmosphere was extremely dull. At the critical moment, Hou Shiming called all the test team members. On the one hand, he encouraged everyone, built up confidence and let go of their ideological burdens. On the other hand, actively deploy the investigation work and put forward specific requirements. In just 9 days at the proving ground, he organized more than 20 technicians who stayed at the proving ground to write a summary of the 19 test and a preliminary failure analysis report, and initially located the failure.

In the early stage of model development, Hou Shiming attached importance to the basic work of technology, and advocated taking quality, reliability and standardization as the basis of development, and model development should be based first, which reflected the idea that the core of quality assurance is "prevention first" and "grasping quality from the source".

When the two models were developed simultaneously, Hou Shiming creatively put forward the idea of maximum compatibility design of the two models. He continued this tradition of bringing the old with the new, guiding apprentices in four departments and cultivating a group of young technical backbones over the years. These people have now become the leaders, technical backbones and management talents of model development.

During the period of 1996, the four departments were in the period of recovery and development, and the salary and benefits were not very attractive. At that time, the personnel department reported that a graduate student of Beihang University insisted on coming to the Fourth Department, and the major was very suitable. But for some reason, the school has to collect "liquidated damages", and the students' family is not very good. He himself and the four departments agreed that the liquidated damages would be paid in advance by the four departments and then deducted from the monthly salary. After learning about this situation, Hou Shiming personally called the school leaders to explain the situation and reasons, hoping that the school would give support. The school was moved by his spirit of seeking talents and cherishing talents and decided to be exempted from punishment. When asked if the student later knew what he had done for him, Hou Shiming said with a smile, maybe not yet, but as long as it is a needed talent, anyone who has contributed to it can. Now this student has grown into four technical leaders of a certain model.

As the chief engineer, Hou Shiming's busy day is unimaginable for ordinary people. Sometimes he presided over meetings in the hot south in the morning, and participated in technical discussions with designers in the cool Great Wall in the evening, from the comprehensive department, design institute, assembly plant, test station to a component manufacturer.

Hou Shiming, who is 70 years old, is still the chief designer of two national key models, and his work is very difficult. In order to ensure his success, he paid unimaginable hardships. How many times did his wife get sick, and he was either in a meeting outside or far away from the test flight site; When her daughter is a mother for the first time and needs her father's care, she has to set foot on the journey of northwest Shanxi.
