Medical Library (formerly West China University of Medical Sciences Library)
The predecessor was the West China Union University Library founded in 1910. When it was first established, there were no full-time librarians. The number of library documents was very small, and most of them were in English. The first donation the library received was a £50 grant from the Arthington Fund in the UK. In 1910, the cost of purchasing books was US$100. In 1914, the library moved to the second floor of the Huamei No. 2 School Building. In 1915, the university office (office building) was completed, and the library moved to the second floor of the office, with three rooms, and began to take shape. In 1919, the University Executive Council appointed Mrs. Smith Lun, a Canadian who was one of the organizers of BGI and secretary of the Board of Trustees, as librarian, and Shen Boxian as assistant. The library received more donations and its collection of books was gradually enriched. In 1922, the school administrative council approved the establishment of the University Library Club, which aimed to promote and introduce modern Western literature to stimulate people's interest in reading and encourage members to become more involved in library services. On May 19, 1926, the library built with US$15,000 donated by American Raymond Lai was completed and officially put into use. The total area of ??the museum is 3075 square meters, which is shared with the school museum. The library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification system to classify books, and has established three sets of catalogs: title, category, and author. Guangdong Luoshi Haoyizhai donated more than 25,000 volumes of private Chinese books. Mr. Tang Dizhi donated more than 8,100 Chinese books, enriching the collection. In 1931, the Harvard-Yenching Institute in the United States funded the school with a fund of US$300,000, and part of the annual interest was used to purchase books and equipment. On September 23, 1933, the Sichuan Department of Education forwarded an instruction from the Ministry of Education on “Private West China Union University should be approved for registration.” The BGI library has been further developed. Mr. Cheng Zhixuan, a scholar studying in Japan, serves as the curator. In 1935, BGI Library received the first special book subsidy from the Ministry of Education. In 1936, the school established 3 colleges and 10 departments, and the library was further enriched and developed. It has a collection of more than 25,000 volumes, including more than 7,000 volumes of Chinese books and periodicals and more than 15,000 volumes of foreign books and periodicals. In terms of management, the library has a Chinese Department and a Western Department. During the Anti-Japanese War, BGI successively admitted private Jinling University, Jinling Women’s College of Arts and Sciences, Nanjing Jinling Theological Seminary, Nanjing Central University School of Medicine, Beijing Yenching University, and Jinan Qilu University, both funded by the United States Christian University Board of Trustees (UBCC). , Department of Biology of Soochow University in Suzhou and other schools. These schools borrow BGI's campus buildings, laboratories, hospitals, and libraries to run their schools, and the BGI Library provides the same borrowing conditions as those of the school's readers. The library has successively set up some branches to facilitate readers. In 1938, a science library was built in the Chemistry Building of the school, and in 1943, a dental library branch was established in the School of Dentistry. In addition, the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Department Library, the Sisheng Temple Renji Hospital Library and the Chinese Culture Research Library are established at Cunren Hospital on Shaanxi Street in this city. In addition, a large amount of documentation has been added to the Gurdjieff Research Library in the school museum. That year, there were 6,542 certified readers, 35,423 books and periodicals lent out, 315,463 books read in the library, and 253,142 readers. At that time, BGI Library also obtained microfilms of important periodicals from Washington State in the United States and London Parliament in the United Kingdom. Due to poor transportation at that time, the journals could not arrive on time, so these microfilms of scientific journals were very precious. Dr. Joseph Needham conducted academic activities in Huaxiba, and also sent microfilm reading equipment and materials to Huada Library, starting the earliest microfilm reading service in Sichuan university libraries. In 1951, the school was renamed West China University. After the school adjustment in October 1953, the Ministry of Health decided to change the name of "West China University" to "Sichuan Medical College". Most of the liberal arts and science documents collected by the library are allocated to Sichuan University, Sichuan Provincial Library and the Provincial Museum of Culture and History. The library only retains the biomedical books and periodicals collected by the BGI Clinical Medicine Branch, and each branch will be withdrawn after the adjustment of the school. At this point, the library collection has transformed from a comprehensive collection to a collection structure with biomedical literature as the main collection. In 1959, the Science and Technology Information Reference Room was transferred from the Scientific Research Division to the library. In January 1983, the new library building was completed. The construction area is 8,800 square meters and the library area is 2,657 square meters. The reading room covers an area of ??3,398 square meters and has 900 reading seats. The clinical medicine branch was cancelled. In June 1984, he established the Sichuan Medical Library and Information Network and served as the director. On May 14, 1985, the school was renamed West China University of Medical Sciences with the approval of the Ministry of Health, and the library was renamed West China University of Medical Sciences Library. In 1993, the Ministry of Health approved the establishment of the "Ministry of Health Medical and Health Science and Technology Project Novelty Search and Consultation Station" at the former West China University of Medical Sciences. Jiang'an Pavilion was built in 2005 and is located in Shuangliu County. The pavilion covers an area of ??25,300 square meters and was designed by the famous Canadian designer Mr. Amulaid. The torch-like appearance is modern and fashionable, symbolizing the eternal fire of wisdom; the main color of light brown is stable and elegant, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The collection is characterized by comprehensiveness and basic nature. Implement a reader-centered service model of "integration of collection, borrowing, reading and consultation". Thousands of digital interfaces are installed in the museum, and wireless Internet access is available.
