Hadoop was officially introduced by the Apache Software Foundation in the fall of 2005 as part of the Lucene sub-project Nutch.

It is inspired by Map/Reduce and Google File System (GFS), which were first developed by Google Lab.

In March 2006, Map/Reduce and Nutch Distributed File System (NDFS) were each included in a project called Hadoop.
