On the Lantern Festival, Comrade Deng Xiaoping visited the Children's Computer Activity Center in china welfare institute. Two pupils, Li Jin and Lin Cong, performed computer operations for Comrade Deng Xiaoping. After watching the performance, Comrade Deng Xiaoping patted Li Jin on the shoulder, repeatedly praised him, and instructed that "popularizing computers should start with dolls". This instruction is like spring breeze and rain dew, which greatly promotes the popularization of computer education in primary and secondary schools in China.

-Li Jin (a researcher at Microsoft Research Institute)

At the beginning of 1983, computer extracurricular activities began in primary and secondary schools. At that time, I was a fifth-grade primary school student. I was lucky enough to be sent to the District Children's Palace to learn the "basic" programming language and participated in the competition organized by the city. I won the first prize, so I was able to enter the computer activity center of the Children's Palace of Zhongfuhui, and started my computer programming study and activities in my youth under the guidance of teachers such as Wang Songzan. Four years of after-school life has consolidated the cornerstone of my growth.

I remember that at that time, I had entered the second affiliated middle school of East China Normal University to study in Grade One. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday, I will go to the computer room of Children's Palace with my schoolbag on my back and study the program with relish. I often try to write some programs to solve problems in mathematics and physics, and also learn some knowledge of graph theory and game in college courses to improve my programming ability and skills.

1February, 1984, under the leadership of teacher Wang Songzan, I participated in the exhibition of "Shanghai Microelectronics Technology and Its Application" on behalf of all the students in the Computer Activity Center of Children's Palace, and performed my own programs of "Robot Singing" and "Robot Chess Playing" for Grandpa Deng Xiaoping. Grandpa Deng was very happy to see it. He touched my head and said, "The popularization of computers should start with dolls."

The computer group in Children's Palace is a harmonious family: regardless of age, grade, teacher and student, everyone can discuss problems together; Get the result, everyone cheers together; Sometimes, as a student, you listen to classmates and teachers talk about their experiences. Sometimes, when you are a teacher, Kan Kan talks about "teaching" for others. Here, you can think hard about writing a program alone, or discuss with you whether the program is optimized. In the past four years, I have learned to "deal with" computers. I will "tell" computers my ideas by writing programs, so that they can do things according to people's wishes. I also learned the rigorous logical thinking analysis method and developed the habit of doing things meticulously. The written program ranges from dozens to hundreds, even thousands and tens of thousands of lines. More importantly, I have cultivated the necessary qualities of modern society with my school here: I have learned to study according to my own needs; Learned to communicate and get along with others; Learned how to cooperate with others to challenge a difficult task.

During my four years in Children's Palace, I got the guidance of high-level full-time and part-time computer teachers. Mentors such as Wang Songzan often accompany us to work in front of the computer until late at night, and they often pay for our students who are "in front of the computer" to solve the problem of lack of meals. Experts and scholars are often invited to give us face-to-face lectures and guidance. Sometimes it's hard to teach yourself. Dial us when you figure it out. The teacher's love for us will be remembered for life. Teachers' persistence in career and learning has always inspired us and set an example for our lifelong learning.

During the four years in the Children's Palace, the teacher gave us one question, task and project after another, boldly let us participate in the research, let us learn through constant exploration and attempt, let us create with scientific research methods from an early age, and be honed in overcoming difficulties. I remember that when I was 0/4 years old, with the help of a part-time tutor, I accepted the research on the topic "Quality Inspection of High Frequency Head Production Line in Wu Shang No.14 Factory". On a hot day, it takes more than ten hours to debug the program next to the high-temperature oven in the factory. There are many problems in the experiment. The teacher helped me find the information and analyzed it with me. Over the past six months, we have overcome one difficulty after another, and finally completed the application of "VHF TV tuner automatic detection system" in the tuner production line of Shanghai No.14 Factory, which not only ensured the quality of tuner production, but also learned scientific research methods and won the special science award of China Science Foundation.

1987, I entered Tsinghua University to study without examination, and received my doctorate seven years later. Now I'm doing research at Microsoft Research Institute near Seattle, USA. It has been sixteen years since I left Shanghai, went to Beijing and went to America. Whether studying or working, I still can't forget and deeply cherish the off-campus life I spent in the Children's Palace of China Welfare Institute as a teenager. So rich and unforgettable.
