At the beginning of 1983, computer extracurricular activities began in primary and secondary schools. At that time, I was a fifth-grade primary school student. I was lucky enough to be sent to the District Children's Palace to learn the "basic" programming language and participated in the competition organized by the city. I won the first prize, so I was able to enter the computer activity center of the Children's Palace of Zhongfuhui, and started my computer programming study and activities in my youth under the guidance of teachers such as Wang Songzan. Four years of after-school life has consolidated the cornerstone of my growth.
I remember that at that time, I had entered the second affiliated middle school of East China Normal University to study in Grade One. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday, I will go to the computer room of Children's Palace with my schoolbag on my back and study the program with relish. I often try to write some programs to solve problems in mathematics and physics, and also learn some knowledge of graph theory and game in college courses to improve my programming ability and skills.
1February, 1984, under the leadership of teacher Wang Songzan, I participated in the exhibition of "Shanghai Microelectronics Technology and Its Application" on behalf of all the students in the Computer Activity Center of Children's Palace, and performed my own programs of "Robot Singing" and "Robot Chess Playing" for Grandpa Deng Xiaoping. I remember that when I was 0/4 years old, with the help of a part-time tutor, I accepted the research on the topic "Quality Inspection of High Frequency Head Production Line in Wu Shang No.14 Factory". On a hot day, it takes more than ten hours to debug the program next to the high-temperature oven in the factory. There are many problems in the experiment. The teacher helped me find the information and analyzed it with me. Over the past six months, we have overcome one difficulty after another, and finally completed the application of "VHF TV tuner automatic detection system" in the tuner production line of Shanghai No.14 Factory, which not only ensured the quality of tuner production, but also learned scientific research methods and won the special science award of China Science Foundation.
1987, I entered Tsinghua University to study without examination, and received my doctorate seven years later. Now I'm doing research at Microsoft Research Institute near Seattle, USA. It has been sixteen years since I left Shanghai, went to Beijing and went to America. Whether studying or working, I still can't forget and deeply cherish the off-campus life I spent in the Children's Palace of China Welfare Institute as a teenager. So rich and unforgettable.
