In the 1980s, China was in the midst of a boom in all kinds of waste, but the development of science and technology was faced with bottlenecks caused by gaps in the scientific and technological team and a lack of talent. Revitalizing education and cultivating a new generation of high-quality innovative talents is the call of the times. It was against this background that the National College Mechanics Competition began to take shape.

At the editorial board meeting of "Mechanics and Practice" held in Hohhot in August 1986, Professor Wu Jike of Peking University suggested holding a university-level mechanics competition, which was unanimously approved. Academician Zheng Zhemin, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Mechanics, listened to the relevant work report and arranged for the "Mechanics and Practice" editorial board (competition organizing committee) to organize the event.
