The former site of Centennial Union Medical College, a national key cultural relic protection unit, is still in use today. It is a part of Peking Union Medical College. There is a security guard at the gate, and outsiders are not allowed in. In the evening, professors leave work irregularly and enjoy security treatment.
As we all know, professors and medical experts who lived 100 years ago enjoyed more advanced treatment than this, that is, a few hundred meters away from here and a few minutes' walk, there is an expert villa of Union Medical College Hospital. Peking Union Medical College Hospital is a private affiliated hospital of Peking Union Medical College founded by China Medical Foundation affiliated to Rockefeller Financial Group, USA. It was built in 192 1. Rockefeller Foundation invested in the construction of Union Medical College Hospital, and at the same time, established an expert villa here, which is the exclusive top residential area for senior professors of Union Medical College Hospital.
The residential complex of Union Medical College Hospital, including the south area located at No.26 Beijige Santiao in Dongcheng District and the north area located at No.59 Waiwu Street, which is separated by two hutongs in the north, faces Union Medical College Hospital across Dongdan North Street. It is one of the important historical sites and representative buildings in modern Beijing. Now it is a cultural relic protection unit in Beijing. I estimate that it will merge with the former site of Peking Union Medical College in a few years and be upgraded to a national key cultural relics protection unit.
There is a gate with three side-by-side arched openings at the entrance of the north and south areas of residential quarters. Looking around, the unique villa architecture shows the uniqueness here. I'm afraid it's hard to guess what this place is if it's not the introduction on the sign of "Union Hospital Residential Group" at the door. Every time I pass by here, I always have the urge to go in and find out. Finally, on a spring afternoon, an accidental opportunity let me into it and met the scenery of the garden.
The residential building of Union Medical College Hospital (North District) is located at No.59 Foreign Affairs Street. This residential area was originally composed of more than a dozen typical two-story semi-American modern eclectic rural detached villas, with prominent triangular door covers, brick and wood structures, gray brick drywall, row houses and detached houses at the gate. Some are castle-like spires, and some are country villa-like slopes, with various forms and exquisite craftsmanship. In the mid-1990s, four detached houses in the southern end were demolished, and now there are six well-preserved houses.
The layout of the buildings in the courtyard is regular and orderly, and the roads, flower beds, greening and other environments are beautifully arranged, which is isomorphic with the American buildings with slate roofs and gray brick walls at the top of the slope, forming a quiet living environment. It is said that the courtyard is about 127 meters long from north to south and about 140 meters long from east to west. At the southern end of the central axis is the gate, decorated with prominent triangular door covers. At the northern end of the central axis is a two-and-a-half-story row house, which forms the characteristics of our hospital. The building is symmetrical with the central axis, and there is an arched through doorway, which echoes the arched doorway of the entrance porter at the southern end of the central axis.
The south of the courtyard consists of three groups of independent houses, which are symmetrical around the central axis. The shape of each group of houses is basically symmetrical about the central axis, but it has changed. The central part of the central axis of the southern district is a circular ring road and flower beds, which form the control center of the southern district residence. The residential layout in the North District is relatively flexible, and absolute symmetry is not required. On the east side of this courtyard, there is a western-style building that is inconsistent with the architectural style of this courtyard, which is earlier than all the buildings in the courtyard.
The layout of detached houses is flexible, and they are all rectangular plane combinations, with each building area of about 600 square meters. The first floor is about 60 cm higher than outdoor, with two floors above ground and one underground. In addition to the living room, kitchen, dining room, bedroom, bathroom and other main rooms, there are auxiliary rooms and small storage rooms. The entrance to the first floor is often combined with the arched porch at the top of a single slope, which is vivid.
At present, although the building of our hospital has been partially rebuilt and repaired, the original courtyard and architectural style are still well preserved, and it is still the dormitory of Union Medical College Hospital. There is a lady in the reception room at the door, and outsiders are not allowed to enter without permission. I begged that I should take a picture in it. She nodded by default.
The residential area of Union Medical College Hospital (South District) is located at No.26, Santiao, Beijige, with the courtyard gate facing north. A door with three arched openings side by side and a tricycle fruit stand at the door immediately make people feel the living atmosphere of combining local culture with foreign culture. There is a Beijing uncle in the reception room, with a kind attitude and firm tone, and non-hospital personnel are not allowed to enter.
While he was not on duty, I hurried into the yard for a walk. The villa building with special style is surrounded by a round quadrangle with a small square flower bed in the middle, which is similar to the north area and has the same style. It is also composed of many houses in the form of American rural independent villas, with gray brick drywall and prominent triangular door covers at the gate, completely retaining the style of western-style villas. More than 20 years ago, the popular TV series "Desire" was filmed here.
In addition to the two residential groups in the north and south, there is also a place related to Union Medical College Hospital. That's the Dean's Building of Union Medical College Hospital, located at No.73 Xinkai Road Hutong, between the north and the south, south of Foreign Affairs Street, across Xizongbu Hutong.
Built in 1920, this two-story building with a garden is the residence of Ruiheng Liu, Dean of the First Ren Zhongfang of Union Medical College Hospital. After liberation, Mr Zhang Zhizhong lived here for 20 years until his death. This is a private club. I really want to have a look, but I can't get it out.
The former site of Concord Medical College and the residential complex of Concord Hospital, either rebuilt on the basis of the original Wang Fu or rooted in Beijing residential hutongs, are the combination of Chinese and western architectural styles and the fusion form of Chinese and western cultures. Fireworks in the hutong of the Imperial Capital, and the natural wind of American country villas. From them 100 years ago, and from Concord people 100 years ago, we see and deeply know that fireworks and nature can be reconciled.
