The Shanghai Conservatory of Music is the founder and incubator of modern professional music education in China, the first batch of "double-first-class" universities in China. Shanghai Conservatory of Music, formerly known as the National Conservatory of Music, was founded by Mr. Cai Yuanpei and Mr. Xiao Youmei in Shanghai on November 27, 1927. Mr. Cai Yuanpei, the first president, is the first independent national higher music institution in China. With the school-running concept of "helping the West to establish China, making use of it as the body", it has established the professional establishment and discipline system of professional music education in China. Since 1956, it has been renamed as a key institution directly under the Ministry of Culture, and now it is established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Shanghai. In 217, it was listed as the first batch of "double-first-class" construction universities in China and selected as a high-level local university construction school in Shanghai.

Our college has a complete discipline system, and it is the only professional music college in China with three first-class disciplines, namely, Music and Dance, Art Theory, Drama and Film & Television, and has formed a comprehensive system of music disciplines with "four-wheel drive" in music creation, music performance, music theory and music application. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 217, "Music and Dance" in our college was rated as A+, ranking first in the country; "Art Theory" was awarded the B+ rating, ranking the top 2% in China; "Drama and Film and Television Studies" was rated B, ranking the top 3% in China.
