Since 2002, he has served as deputy director of the Peking University School Committee, dean of the School of Chinese as a Foreign Language of Peking University, dean of the Asia-Pacific Research Institute of Peking University, and member of the Academic Committee and Academic Degrees Committee of Peking University. He used to be deputy head of the expert group of history discipline of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, deputy head of the expert group of world history discipline of National Social Science Fund, deputy director of the steering committee of history discipline of Ministry of Education, vice president of China Historical Society, vice president of Beijing Social Science Federation, president of Beijing Historical Society and vice president of China Asia-Pacific Society.

He died in 2006.
