Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation is a non-profit independent legal entity officially registered in Sichuan Provincial Civil Affairs Department, which provides financial support for giant panda protection research. Since the establishment of 1987, the Foundation has done a lot of fruitful work in ex-situ breeding of giant pandas, scientific research, and promoting cooperation and friendly exchanges at home and abroad.
Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation has successively funded 87 applied and basic scientific research projects in Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base, Chengdu Zoo and related cooperative scientific research units and universities, among which 42 achievements have won national, provincial (ministerial) and municipal technological invention awards or scientific and technological progress awards; The "Giant Panda Breeding Research Base" has become a research and ex-situ conservation center for giant pandas, with a total of 59 pandas/kloc-0 and 55 cubs/kloc-0, and 55 cubs who survived to over half a year old.
Brief introduction of Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base
Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base is located on the shallow hill on the side of Axe Mountain in the northern suburb of Chengdu, which is 0/5km away from the urban area and covers an area of 540mu. It is an important place for the protection of giant pandas in different places.
The first phase of the base project1was started in March, 1987, and was completed in June, 1988. The animal house for giant panda breeding and a good micro-ecological environment were built. The second phase of the expansion project started in June19910, and was completed in June 1995, and the giant panda habitat simulating the wild ecological environment was built.
The base has complete facilities for giant panda breeding, including animal house, feed room, medical station, giant panda memorial hall, experimental building and training center, as well as tens of thousands of bamboo and shrubs for giant pandas. The base is planning to expand 3,000 mu of land and build a semi-wild stocking area to simulate the wild habitat of giant pandas, so as to prepare for the final return of giant pandas to nature.
