The western project aims to fund social science researchers in the western region to focus on major theoretical and practical issues in the reform, opening up and modernization in the western region, to strengthen national unity, implement the party's religious policy, safeguard national unity, carry out relevant research on rescuing outstanding national cultural heritage and building regional advantageous disciplines, and better serve the economic and social development in the western region. The western project is reported and evaluated together with the annual project of the National Social Science Fund every year, and the funding intensity is roughly the same as that of the general projects of the National Social Science Fund.
