Yunnan University for Nationalities is a comprehensive university to train senior professionals of all ethnic groups, and a provincial-level key university determined by the Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Yunnan Provincial People's Government. The school was founded in 1 951August1day, formerly known as Yunnan University for Nationalities. It is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning for nationalities in People's Republic of China (PRC). In April 2003, it was renamed Yunnan University for Nationalities, and it has been 70 years since then.

The school has now become a comprehensive university with complete disciplines and distinctive school-running characteristics, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art and other disciplines 10, forming a discipline pattern featuring ethnology, sociology, national language and literature, Southeast Asian language and culture, paying equal attention to arts and sciences, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines.

The school has established cooperation and exchange relations with more than 80 universities or academic institutions in more than 20 countries, including the United States, Norway, Japan and South Korea.
