On Tuesday, Mackenzie Bezos, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced on Twitter and Medium blog that she has donated $1.67 billion to charity so far. She also announced that she was officially renamed MacKenzie Scott.
The non-profit organizations she donated fall into nine categories: racial equality, LGBTQ+ equality, gender equality, economic mobility, empathy and bridging differences, functional democracy, public health, global development and climate change.
Scott signed the "giving pledge" in May 219-promising to donate more than half of her wealth in their lifetime or in their will. Since she divorced Bezos in mid-219, Scott's net worth was estimated at $58 billion, and she acquired a quarter of Bezos' Amazon shares, which was worth $36 billion at that time.
Of the nine causes, by far, she has contributed the most to racial equality, totaling $586.7 million. Her second largest donation area is economic mobility, with charitable donations reaching $399.5 million. The non-profit organizations she donated include Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Black Girls CODE, Blue Meridian Partners, Center for Policing Equity, George walker bush Presidential Center, Howard University, Obama Foundation and United Negro College Fund.
Scott wrote: "Pteroptera is a small butterfly with invisible wings, which can bear 4 times its own weight." "In the past 14 months, I was inspired by the ability of individuals to help others: an association of professional women guided girls to pay for their own education through the same project; A network of low-income families who help themselves out of poverty through mutual support and advice. "
Although Scott has remained basically silent since the divorce, she provided some insights on the process that she started last autumn in her Medium blog post. She wrote: "I invited a team of non-profit consultants, whose main representatives came from historically marginalized ethnic, gender and sexual identity groups. They helped me find and evaluate organizations that have a significant impact on various undertakings."
Scott added: "Although this work is in progress and will last for several years, I released an update today, because after the recent events, my reflection shows that I have been ignoring the dividend of privilege: I can arouse people's attention to the organizations and leaders who promote change."
In November 218, when Scott and Bezos were still together, the couple announced a $2 billion commitment for two causes: supporting homeless families and funding the establishment of a national kindergarten network inspired by Montessori in underserved communities. The Amazon founder's fund called Bezos Day One Fund donated about $1 million to non-profit organizations dedicated to helping homeless families in 218 and 219. In February this year, Bezos also announced the establishment of the $1 billion Bezos Earth Fund, which is dedicated to fighting climate change. He hasn't announced the latest progress of this charity action. Jeff Bezos hasn't signed the giving pledge yet.
at the end of the blog post, Scott promised that she would continue to share her charitable donations publicly "in the next few months or years".
