Is former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan an old friend of the Chinese people?
In 2006, just before the end of his term as United Nations Secretary-General, Annan visited Peking University for the first time. His speech at that time aroused widespread discussion among the intellectual community and the public.
In 2009, Annan visited Peking University as a director of the United Nations Foundation and had in-depth exchanges with Peking University scholars and students.
"China and Africa both have mottos about 'harmony' in ancient times, which proves the importance of 'harmony' to social development since ancient times. However, with the development of the times, people are often concerned about wealth and power. Pursuit loses sight," Annan said in his speech at Peking University.
In his decades of working in the United Nations, Annan has a deep understanding of the hardships involved. He believes that harmony has three foundations: peace and security, sustainable and inclusive development, and human rights and the rule of law. These three together lay the foundation for the harmony, prosperity and development of society. With the development of China's economy, cooperation and exchanges between China and Africa have become increasingly abundant. Both sides hope that the overall world pattern will be peaceful and stable.
“Today’s world is in constant change. Wealth and power are no longer the privileges of specific regions. Countries, regions and institutions should adapt to this change. China’s reform and opening up have made it an international leader. By regaining its central position in affairs and adhering to the three foundations of building a harmonious society, China will play an important role in the reconstruction of the world order.
