In 1940, he graduated from the College Department of the Military Industrial School of the Ministry of Military and Political Affairs of Chongqing.

In 1945, he went to study abroad at the University of Michigan Graduate School in the United States and received a master's degree in mechanical engineering and a doctorate in engineering mechanics.

He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (faculty member) in 1980, and as an academician of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) in 1985.

He led and participated in the development of the first self-designed liquid rocket engine for short- and medium-range ballistic surface-to-surface missiles. He has won 2 National Science and Technology Progress Special Awards, the Qiushi Fund Outstanding Scientist Award, and Outstanding Contribution to China's Manned Spaceflight Work
