During Shun's reign, floods often occurred in the land of China. Yu wrote to Shun asking to be responsible for the flood control work, saying: "My father's use of weirs to control floods did not achieve any results. I want to use the diversion method to control the water and let the water flow into the sea." Shun agreed to let Yu be responsible for the water control. Yu led the skilled craftsmen to dig the river and channel the water. After 13 years of water control, the flood was finally eliminated.
