Songhe Tower was founded by the Xu family in Xuanmiao Temple, Suzhou in the 22nd year of Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1757), operating a noodle shop and selling meals. The films "Three Flavors of China" and "Gourmet" are both based on Songhe Tower, and the famous novelist Jin Yong mentioned Songhe Tower many times in his "Dragon and the Eight Parts".

In 2007, the eighty-four-year-old Jin Yong returned to Songhe Tower.
