The mountains in the west of Beijing are collectively called Xishan. Jingxi ancient road is an important symbol and historical witness of Jingxi ancient civilization. Among the mountains, Wu Jin is everywhere. Since the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, millions of people in Beijing have paid for the Carboniferous Period. In addition, that stone and burnt glass produce here are even more famous in Beijing. camel and horses hauling coal and freight travel in droves, day aft day, year after year on the mountain road. Over time, a road of business travel has been formed from Beijing to the western mountainous areas, and then as far away as Inner Mongolia and Shanxi.
The ancient Jingxi Road is like a big net, spanning Mentougou, with many long roads. These ancient roads mainly include commercial roads, military roads and incense roads, and they exchange needed items. Among them, Shang Dao has the most historical sites. After hundreds of years of history, although there are signs of decline, the ancient charm of local customs still exists, especially suitable for hiking. You can choose a short passage to cross by yourself.
In the early years, every autumn, rich people inside and outside Beijing began to buy cattle and horses and went to Xishan Yaotou to buy coal. Go out of the city from Fuchengmen, the "Coal Gate", go straight to the west, and then set foot on the road to the western hills. According to legend, in the Five Dynasties, there was a warlord named Liu Rengong who took the mountain as the king and became the local emperor. He set up his own home in Yu He County and cut the mountain to clear the way to build this road, so later generations also called the middle road of Xishan Road the Yu He Ancient Road. In the middle of this ancient road, there is a place called Quanmen, which is the birthplace of the coal industry in western Beijing. From the circle gate to the Fengkou Temple in the west, it is a valley 13 miles long, so the locals call it Mentougou, hence the name of Mentougou District in Beijing.
The west section of the middle road of the ancient road is the most essential section of Fengkou Temple. The ancient road passes through the circle gate, and then walks along the valley called Mentougou, and you arrive at the first Guanfengkou Temple in western Beijing. About 200 meters westbound from Fengkouan, at the corner of a mountain, there is a section cut out of the mountain, about 20 meters long and 1.5-2 meters wide, all of which are integrated sedimentary fine sandstone with hard, delicate and crimson stone. There are hundreds of clear hoof nests scattered on the road, alternating left and right, roughly divided into two rows. The hoof fossa is nearly 20 cm in diameter, deep 15 cm and shallow 10 cm. The rocks and bluestones are red and brown, and the hoof nests are dancing around the dragon, which can be described as a wonder of the ages. Inscription records that on this ancient road, "livestock transport coal day and night" has formed such a magnificent landscape after thousands of years of trampling on the iron hoofs of livestock transporting coal.
This 20-meter-long path is the most densely populated place on the ancient Jingxi Road, and it is also the most spectacular section of the ancient Jingxi Road in China. In ancient times, due to the limitation of drainage, lifting and other conditions, most of the kiln sites west of Fengkou Temple were located in mountainous areas. At that time, the coal in the mountainous area was transported by large livestock such as donkeys and snails, and the teams on the ancient road kept up day and night. For thousands of years, deep hooves have been left on the hard stone surface. Today, many places have left these hoof nests, which can reflect the busy scene of transporting coal at that time.
The Jingxi Ancient Road used to be a Guanshan Avenue more than six meters wide, all paved with stones. Because the mountain road is steep, a row of standing stones will be planted every one meter to prevent the stones from loosening and slipping, which is also the secret of the long-term stability of the ancient road.
