The brand's English name "nike" originally means the Greek goddess of victory. Its trademark pattern is a hook, which symbolizes the feathers of the wings of the goddess of victory, and also represents speed, dynamics and gentleness.

The founder, Bill Bowerman, was a mediocre long-distance runner in college. He had always planned to combine sports and business and be able to profit.

When NIKE was founded, its total entrepreneurial capital was only US$1,200, and it was registered at the University of Oregon. NIKE was formally established in 1964. Its predecessor was called Le Cordon Bleu Sports. In 1971, Le Cordon Bleu Sports was officially renamed NIKE.

The soles of the first pair of NIKE shoes were made from waffle molds. Bowerman's inspiration came in 1971 when he saw his wife making waffles, and then he got inspired. A grooved pattern is placed on the sole of a sneaker to enhance the shoe's grip and disperse impact. This inspiration gave birth to the later "NIKE waffle training shoes", which were patented in 1974.
