Dangyang was a kingdom of power in ancient times. During the Warring States Period, the Qin Dynasty founded Dangyang County, which belongs to Nanjun. Within the territory there are Yuquan Temple, a Buddhist holy place known as one of the "Four Wonders in the World", and Guanling Temple, one of the three largest Guan Temples in China. On October 22, 1988, the State Council approved Dangyang to be removed from the county and established as a city. The second meeting of the Eleventh People's Congress of Dangyang County decided that Dangyang City was officially established on January 1, 1989. In March 1992, Yichang prefecture and city were merged, and Dangyang City was under the jurisdiction of Yichang City.
