The historical origin of Chongming

During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Wu and wuyue fought at the mouth of the Yangtze River. In the third year of Jinghaidu Town (937), Yao Yanhong set up Chongming Town in Xisha, and Chongming sandbar was built. At the end of the same year, Li Bian replaced Yang Wu with the title of Daqi, later changed the title to Tang (known as Nantang in history) and changed the title to Shengyuan, and continued to administer Chongming Town. After Li Jing succeeded to the throne, Chongming Town was under the jurisdiction of Jinghai Institute (now Nantong City). In the fifth year of Xiande (958), the army of the later Zhou Dynasty captured all the territory of Nantang in Jiangbei and abolished the organizational system of Chongming Town.

At the beginning of the Northern Song Dynasty, Chongming Town was restored and still under the jurisdiction of Haimen County in Tongzhou (now Nantong City). The court sent exiled prisoners to Chongming Shazhou to fry salt, and the salt industry in Chongming Island began. In the Southern Song Dynasty, Han Tuozhou, Zhang, Liu Jieyu each had a manor in Zai and Yao to facilitate salt fishing. In the 15th year of Jiading (1222), Yaoliusha set up a God-given saltworks, collected salt tax and transferred to Tongzhou. In the first year of Baoqing (1225), it was assigned to Huaidong.
