How to choose Erhu:
1. Material: The bow should be made of natural bamboo or precious materials. But no matter what the material is, the quality of the material is crucial. Made of high-quality material, when you pick it up gently, you can immediately feel its elasticity, toughness, and "heavy" feel. Generally speaking, the quality of the bow rod depends on whether the material is uniform in thickness and whether the bow rod is round. For bow rods made of the same material, with the same diameter and length, the heavier one should be preferred.
2. Length: The length of a standard Erhu bow is 83 cm, and the diameter of the bow rod ranges from 0.65 to 0.70, 0.75, and 0.80 cm.
3. Curvature of the grip: Choose one with a suitable curvature of the bow grip. The proper curvature of the bow rod at the point where the bow is held can make the player's wrist more comfortable and natural. It can achieve string changing quickly, dexterously and with less effort, and it can obtain the maximum volume and good sound quality with the smallest range of motion. Generally speaking, the curvature of the grip should not be too large.
4. Horsetail: Although nylon silk, inferior horsetail and high-quality black and white horsetail can rub strings and make sounds when coated with rosin, the sound produced by inferior horsetail is noisy and mixed, while the sound produced by high-quality white horsetail is sweet and moist. This is because the hair scales on the surface of high-quality white horsetails are uniform and have sharp edges, which are conducive to friction on the strings.
